Sex Comedy

A type of comedy in which the humor is derived from bedroom farce, romantic lust and/or obsession, and other sexual situations. Though the moniker infers perhaps graphic or gratuitous sexuality or nudity, this subgenre instead primarily relies on sharp witticisms, situational humor, slapstick, and other conventions shared by the slapstick comedy. Mistaken identity, romantic triangles, repression, and embarrassing predicaments are main elements, with narratives often involving game playing, flirting and the loss of virginity. These films already existed in the '50s (Seven Year Itch, Pillow Talk) before becoming more explicit and risque in the '60s (The Graduate, Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice). The '70s brought a cynical edge with Carnal Knowledge and the films of Woody Allen, while the '80s reveled in teen sex (Risky Business,Fast Times at Ridgemont High). The '90s brought variations on the genre, with focuses on gays and lesbians (The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love, Jeffrey) and multiple partners (Threesome).
