The University of Michigan School of Public Health is one of the professional graduate schools of the University of Michigan. Located in Ann Arbor, Michigan UM SPH is one of the oldest schools of public health in the country and is also considered one of the most prestigious schools focusing on health in the United States. Founded in 1941, the University of Michigan School of Public Health grew out of the University of Michigan's degree programs in public health, some of which date back to the 19th century.

The School's mission statement was updated in 2011:

"The University of Michigan School of Public Health seeks to create and disseminate knowledge with the aim of preventing disease and promoting the health of populations worldwide. We are especially concerned with health equity and thus have a special focus on disadvantaged populations who suffer disproportionately from illness and disability. We serve as a diverse and inclusive crossroads of knowledge and practice, with the goal of solving current and future public health problems."[1]

National Ranking:

According to the 2011 US News report on graduate programs, the University of Michigan School of Public Health is ranked as the #4 School of Public Health in the country and also has the #1 Healthcare Management program in the country.[2][3][4]

The Master's in Public Health Program - MPH is offered in five departments of the school (each of which has various program concentrations):

  • Biostatistics
  • Environmental Health Sciences
  • Epidemiology
  • Health Behavior and Health Education
  • Health Management and Policy

Other degree programs offered by departments include:

  • Biostatistics: MS, PhD
  • Environmental Health: MS, PhD
  • Epidemiology: MS, PhD
  • Health Behavior and Health Education: PhD
  • Health Policy and Management: MS, MHSA, PhD

(MS and PhD programs are offered under the aegis of the University of Michigan Rackham School of Graduate Studies.)

Starting in 2012, a master's program in Health Informatics is being offered jointly by the School of Information and School of Public Health at the University of Michigan.

Another relatively new program is offered completely online: Certificate in the Foundations of Public Health .
