The Central Collegiate Hockey Association is a NCAA Men's Division I Ice Hockey college athletic conference that operates mostly in Michigan and Ohio, although it also has members in Alaska and Indiana. It participates in the NCAA's Division I as a hockey-only conference. It holds its championship tournament at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, usually in the second week of March. The CCHA has no women's division.

Due to the addition of hockey to the Big Ten Conference and the formation of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference, the CCHA will disband at the end of the 2012–13 season.

[edit] 2013 realignment

In September 2010 Pennsylvania State University announced they would transition their men's and women's ACHA programs to NCAA Division I hockey in 2012.[1] Following the announcement, then-CCHA commissioner Tom Anastos publicly stated that the CCHA would strongly consider adding Penn State as the conference's 12th member.[2] On March 21, 2011 the Big Ten Conference announced that the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, and The Ohio State University will leave the CCHA to join the Big Ten hockey conference to begin play in the 2013-2014 season.[3] The exiting CCHA members will join the University of Minnesota and the University of Wisconsin, who are currently members of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA), as well as Penn State.[3]

In response to the creation of the Big Ten hockey conference, Miami University and Western Michigan will join Denver, Colorado College, North Dakota, Nebraska-Omaha, Minnesota-Duluth, and St. Cloud State of the WCHA to create the National Collegiate Hockey Conference.[4]

In response to the creation of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference, Northern Michigan University will rejoin the WCHA in 2013. Invitations to join the WCHA were eventually extended to Alaska–Fairbanks, Bowling Green, Ferris State, Lake Superior State, and Western Michigan in late August 2011.[5] Alaska–Fairbanks, Ferris State and Lake Superior State have accepted and will join Northern Michigan in the WCHA in 2013.[6] Bowling Green announced that they too will join the WCHA in 2013 on October 4, 2011.[7]

Notre Dame accepted an invitation to the Hockey East Association in a press conference on October 5, 2011.[8]
