[edit] History
Lake Angelus, MI covers only 1.6 square miles (4 km2) as part of Oakland County. The lake with which it shares its name takes up 0.6 square miles (2 km2) of the total city boundaries. In the early 1900s, a small community formed around the lake. It was primarily composed of Detroit residents who sought an alternative to the city atmosphere where they were working (most commonly for the auto industry). At this time, the lake was called Three Mile Lake.
During the 1920s, the lake was renamed Lake Angelus by Mrs. Sollace B. Collidge. The community was under pressure from nearby government establishments to be annexed. In 1929, however, a special state Act of legislation was passed, granting Lake Angelus "homerule." By 1930, Lake Angelus had become an official Village. Finally, 54 years after it was authorized for Village status, Lake Angelus became a city of its own on January 1, 1984.[4]
