[edit] April 30

[edit] Cite journal, pmc parameter

Suddenly the pmc param in cite journal does not display and link. This is new, I believe since the pmid shows a lock symbol. Did you now overengineer it? no pmc limits the utility of the pmid, pmc system very much. pls. take a look. 70.137.146.3 (talk) 01:02, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Strange password problem

Hi there - I have a rather odd password problem in that I am logged in through my home PC but I don't know my password. I had my passwords stored in KeePass, but either I have forgotten my Keepass master password or my Keepass key file is corrupt. In other words, I am having to go through all of my online accounts and manually recover the passwords. I don't have my email account associated with my Wiki account. Is there anything that I can do? If I don't either recover the password here or somehow get my email address added to my wiki ID, I won't be able to use the account again after the next time I clear my browser history. Help? SmartGuy (talk) 02:07, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

Special:Preferences. Email options are at the bottom of the page. - Purplewowies (talk) 03:21, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, but that is asking for my current password to confirm the change. Like I said, I have no idea what the current password is. It is stored in a password database to which I have lost access. SmartGuy (talk) 03:29, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
You are up against security measures to prevent somebody from taking over your account if they get access to a computer where you are logged in but they don't know your password. I don't know a solution but you could start by using {{User committed identity}} while you are still logged in. Developers can set an email address but I don't know under which circumstances they will do it. PrimeHunter (talk) 05:55, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! I'll give that a try. SmartGuy (talk) 10:10, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi again PrimeHunter and friends - I have the {{User committed identity}} all set up. How do I go about contacting a developer to see if they will set the appropriate email? SmartGuy (talk) 13:59, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

I don't know anything about procedures or requirements. I got no reply at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)/Archive 82#Retrieval of passwords/committed identity. meta:Privacy policy says: "Users whose accounts do not have a valid email address will not be able to reset their password if it is lost. In such a situation, however, users may be able to contact one of the Wikimedia server administrators to enter a new e-mail address." Perhaps you should mention this when you contact somebody. See meta:System administrators. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:25, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
Cool beans. I'll try that. Thanks.

PrimeHunter and friends - I have not yet tried to contact an admin at meta:System administrators since I have been slammed busy IRL the past few days, but I plan to do so soon. I am posting this reply from a different computer (turns out I am still logged in at work as well as on my home PC) to show further that I am actually me and not somebody else! [edit] Erdos-Bacon number

I seem to have disappeared completely from the discussion of Erdos-Bacon numbers. I have an Erdos-Bacon number of four! I used to be there, but have been discarded. Why?????

My Erdos number is 2, through J. Loxton and through M.V. Subbarao, and my Bacon number is 2. I was in the movie The Bank, with Anthony Lapaglia, who was in a movie with Kevin Bacon.

I have left a message at the talk page of the user who removed the material, informing them of this thread. The edit which removed the material was this one The edit summary, "fails verification by source" refers to the verification policy, and is stating that the sources cited to verify the text, failed to do so.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 04:30, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
It was removed because it was not properly sourced. Specifically, the Bacon number is not sourced. Claiming to appear as an "extra" requires reliable sourcing. I have appeared as an extra in several films, but I can't prove it so I don't have a reliably sourced Bacon number. The user should read WP:RS. The article has a long history of lots of people trying to add themselves because they claim to have been an extra in a film, but rarely is it sourced. Secondarily, since the user acknowledges that he is trying to add himself, WP:COI should be read. 71.50.99.0 (talk) 13:09, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
Two? I'm impressed. My Erdős number is three, but I haven't bothered to document it. I have no idea what my Bacon number is..--SPhilbrick(Talk) 17:18, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

[edit] wikipedia color issue in chrome

I have recently started facing an awkward problem with wikipedia CSS. The articles have started appearing in black font over blue background and has become quite difficult to read. This problem is only with the "english" wikipedia and is only on my chrome browser. I cleared my browser cache.. still not working. I am right now using safari just for wikipedia. I know it is a long shot, but if someone knows what's wrong here... can you please let me know how to resolve this.. appreciate the help... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Deepu04u (talkcontribs)

[edit] Getting a response from Wikimedia Permissions

Dear Help Desk- I have worked long and hard on a major scientific article in my Sandbox: Isothermal Microcalorimetry (IMC) It is a parallel to existing articles on Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC).

I have included 7 figures in my article. One is a photo I took myself, 3 are from journal publications I co-authored, 2 are from papers by others, and one is from product literature. Wikimedia Permissions have flagged 3 of my figures. I have sent them several emails relaying permissions I received by email. I also sent them an email 6 days ago (forwarded again today) summarizing that I have the needed permissions. No response so far.

I would appreciate any help in getting Permissions to release my figures so I can submit my article to the Wikpedia editors. Many thanks, DanDaniels DanDaniels (talk) 09:19, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

The only advice is to please be patient. The OTRS permissions folks are all volunteers like the rest of us, and there is always a backlog.--ukexpat (talk) 13:10, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
I was unhappy with how long it was taking for OTRS to process images - there is a backlog stretching well over a month, and I knew some of my requests have taken a long time to process, so I volunteered to help out.
I'm only on my third day, so still learning the ropes.
In a coincidence, I started working on your requests earlier this morning. They are unnecessarily complicated due to no fault of your own. I have straightened out a number of issues, added permission to several images, but have some emails out to you on some open issues.
I've also offered to help you with your article.
Check your email for some messages from me, and I hope we can get the remaining issues resolved so you can work on the article.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 17:14, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Showing a picture to left of an infobox

I wanted to add a picture to the Past Chairs section of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus article, because there is a lot of empty, white space going a-begging there. However, the presence of the {{Hispanic and Latino Americans}} template creates a long infobox running down the right of the page, and this forced the picture I added to display well below the Past Chairs section, and screwed up the layout of the article. I experimented with the {{stack}} template but it didn't help. How can I make this work? — O'Dea (talk) 11:31, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

Whitespace and placement of elements can be browser dependant. Is [1] what you want? PrimeHunter (talk) 12:00, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
No. In that edit you ask about, the large photograph appears immediately below the infobox instead of above in the Past Chairs section, in both Firefox and Internet Explorer. I wanted the picture to appear in the ample space to the right of the list of names, and left of the long infobox. I've noticed this before, that where an infobox exists, all images are forced to appear below it, and only text can appear to the left of an infobox. Your edit produced the same result as my earlier attempts, in both browsers. — O'Dea (talk) 15:24, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
This is what I want — but this is what I get. — O'Dea (talk) 15:56, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
What about forcing a left alignment on it? (I personally don't like that stylistically in that location, but...) - Purplewowies (talk) 15:35, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
I want it right aligned, alongside the infobox, not left of the bullet list, like this. — O'Dea (talk) 15:56, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

So, is it impossible to display an image left of an infobox? — O'Dea (talk) 00:58, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Fraudulent Account Set up under a 13 year name

Who do I contact regarding a FALSE Account set up in my daughters Name, inappropriate messages being sent back and forth. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.75.133.178 (talk) 14:20, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

Please first check that you are at the right website - this is the Help desk for Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia. It is not a social networking site, and it would, I think, be unusual for inappropriate messages to be sent back and forth here. If the problem is occurring at Wikipedia then the page you need is Wikipedia:Child protection. It includes an email address to which you may send the details - at minimum, the names or URLs of the pages where this is happening. Please don't post any confidential details on this help desk page. -- John of Reading (talk) 14:28, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
You may also wish to email an Administrator to keep the page name from public view, then have them review and possibly delete the page.--Canoe1967 (talk) 15:43, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

[edit] 'Show' button in a collapsible template obscuring some words

I created User:Toshio Yamaguchi/Template:Unsolved. How can I prevent the Show button from obscuring part of the wikilink, ie how can I force the Show button to appear behind the last word of the wikilink? See my sandbox for the described unwanted effect. -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 14:30, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

I copied this to my userspace so I could test with wild abandon. How does User:Purplewowies/testing template/tries look to you? The first is a transclusion of your template page; the second is a transclusion of User:Purplewowies/testing template. I messed with the width, and it seems that the magic number is 350px -ish (though that's slightly bigger) if you want it left aligned. The magic number if you want to keep it centered is about 375px. - Purplewowies (talk) 16:05, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
The second one looks good. Perhaps I should change the template and base the template on something like Template:Navbox instead so that it fills the entire horizontal length of the bottom of the page. That would avoid the problem entirely. -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 16:41, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Steyr GB

Steyr GB (edit|talk|history|links|watch|logs)

My father is the founder of L.E.S. in Skokie, IL. In the "Development" section of this article, it says Steyr took legal action to stop production. This is false, and is pure speculation on the part of gun historians. What really happened was that Steyr had a contract with L.E.S. that if L.E.S. used Steyr's logo and marketing material in regards to the Pi-18, L.E.S. would receive financial compensation. When that compensation never came and Steyr refused to comply with their contract, L.E.S. stopped using the Steyr logo and began marketing their gun as the Rogak P18. Steyr took their company to federal court with Judge Julius Hoffman presiding. Because Steyr had violated the terms of their contract, they ended up dropping the suit. The marketing of the Rogak P18 was NOT in response to a lawsuit, and it was NOT because of copyright infringement, as this article implies. In fact almost the opposite was true. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Osteoblastic (talkcontribs) 15:42, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

Even if the information is true, it cannot be verifiable because you have not provided any sources. It seems like you have a conflict of interest here. AndieM (Am I behaving?) 16:37, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
If information in the article is not supported by reliable sources, anybody may remove it; though in view of your conflict of interest, it would be better for you to explain on the article's Talk page what you would like removed. In order to add alternative information, you need to find reliable sources that support the information. (And if reliable sources disagree, the article should present both sides). --ColinFine (talk) 16:55, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Looking for Edits

Hi-there. I've been trying to find someone to edit a draft of the Bloomberg Television article (I have posted on the WP:Television, WP:Journalism etc as well as the current article's talk page without any response). The current article is generally disorganized and lacks citations. I've tried to clean it up and give better sourcing. Would someone mind taking a look at it? I do some work for Bloomberg L.P. and don't want my conflict of interest to interfere with Wiki guidelines. If you read it over and find the changes suitable, would you also submit the edits to the current article? My draft is located here: User:RivBitz/Bloomberg_Television_Sandbox Thank you!--RivBitz (talk) 18:10, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Version mismatch on Collections extension

Back on April 25, someone reported a problem with the Collections extension throwing a version missmatch error and preventing display of the desired book. See here. We are getting the same problem across multiple browsers and machines. A Google search finds this error coming up in developers forums over the last year or two. Any thoughts or recommendations beyond the previously supplied "clear your history" suggestion? 205.254.147.8 (talk) 19:36, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

There are unfortunately problems in some cases and I don't have a good solution. Perhaps one of the articles in the book contains incompatible code, and the book may work if that article is omitted. Will you create an account at Special:UserLogin/signup and post the username here? Then I or another administrator can confirm the account so it becomes able to save books. If you save the book then others can investigate it. Saving a book is nearly always possible even if the book cannot be generated. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:18, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Citing primary sources via secondary sources

Hi, folks. I have a vague recollection of once reading a guideline about this, but I cannot find it. What is the protocol for citing a secondary source ('Jones') for an idea that has merely been borrowed from and referenced to a reliable primary source ('Smith')? (e.g., 'Smith said in his 2005 essay that the Sun is big.' --Jones) Ideally I would cite Smith's article, but what if Smith published on a website that is now defunct and has no archive? Can I cite Jones' characterization of Smith? NTox · talk 03:57, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

Would WP:PRIMARY help? I'm not sure if that addresses exactly what you're looking for, but it's just my try. AndieM (Am I behaving?) 07:19, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
The guideline you're thinking of is probably WP:SAYWHEREYOUGOTIT. Deor (talk) 14:46, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
Thank you. That's a good one, but not quite it. I'm wondering what to do when the reliable primary source has gone defunct, but the information still exists in the secondary source. NTox · talk 19:01, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
It is general scholarly practice to cite a primary source that is quoted or summarized in a secondary source, if the scholar cannot obtain access to the primary source. Also, even if the secondary source does not integrate the primary source into its work, the mere fact that the secondary source decided the primary source was worth mentioning may be significant. [edit] Karla Turner

The article I want help with is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Karla_Turner

I just added that article. I copied and pasted it from the article posted at http://www.thefullwiki.org/Karla_Turner

That article (from the fullwiki) gives the following reference: "From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia"

Therefore it seems that this article was originally posted on Wikipedia and was deleted. Is this true?

In any case, Why did Wikipedia have no article about Karla Turner -- such a famous writer? Was there previously ANY article on Karla Turner that was deleted? If there was an article before, is it possible someone deleted it though the desire to censor the UFO work she did?

CLARIFICATION: I have just put that article on Wikipedia with the understanding that it was here (on Wikipedia) before and was deleted. Nevertheless, in the "talk" section I can see this:

"A tag has been placed on Dr. Karla Turner requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a clear copyright infringement..."

Please help me solve this mystery! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shyambecker (talkcontribs) 06:52, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Cite button in RefToolbar 2.0

The instructions on the edit page of Wikipedia talk:RefToolbar 2.0 state that specific problems should be raised here.
I use IE8 XP Vector with both boxes (Enable enhanced editing toolbar and Enable dialogs) ticked in my preferences.
The Cite option has disappeared from the RH side of the toolbar
Arjayay (talk) 11:36, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

It works for me. Try to clear your entire cache. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:21, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, but that doesn't work - tried clearing the cache, tried a McAfee "deep-clean", tried a re-boot, tried turning the settings in My Prefernces off and back on again .... any other ideas? - Arjayay (talk) 14:36, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
Does the toolbar look like the second row in the table at Wikipedia:RefToolbar 2.0#Troubleshooting, or like the third row but without "Cite" at the end? What happens if you log out? The Cite option should also be present at the end for logged out users. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:01, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
Yes - that's my normal toolbar - but it usually has the "Cite" at the end
I tried logging out but it made no difference, so I cleared my cache as well, but it still made no difference
As stated above this is with both boxes ticked under "My preferences", so I tried all the combinations :-
* Both off gives the long string of buttons (no drop downs) but the Cite button doesn't work
* First off, Second ticked, gives the long string of buttons (no drop downs) but the Cite button leads to the pop-up "Are you sure you want to navigate away from this page ..."
* First ticked, Second off, gives the "Advanced" options permanently on display. "Advanced" can't be cancelled and the standard options (bold etc.) do not work

I'm unsure from your "Yes" whether you see the second row in the table at Wikipedia:RefToolbar 2.0#Troubleshooting, or the third row but without "Cite" at the end. Do you see the third row without "Cite" and also without the {{}} icon in the middle? Have you followed the full procedure under "To completely clear the cache" at Wikipedia:Bypass your cache#Internet Explorer? Can you try another browser or computer? There might be a JavaScript problem if it doesn't work when the cache is completely cleared and you are logged out. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:17, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

Do I need to delete my account and then sign-up again? If so, how do I delete my account?

You can request a change of username here. However, since you've made no edits yet (apart from this message), it would make more sense to just create a new account. You can't delete your old account, but you can simply not use it. Yunshui  12:41, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Stand-alone list vs Article with embedded list?

Hello. I'm creating on my userspace an article about all the coaches of an association football club. It started out as a table-formatted list, but then I decided to add a "history" section, which got quite extended so I even had to divide it in smaller sub-sections. My question is if I can consider it as a stand-alone list with a particularly big prose section or if it's an article with a long embedded list? I'm asking this because when I put this on the mainspace, I'd like to know how to better name it: List of X coaches (as in a list) or Coaches of X (as in an article). Thanks in advance for your help! Parutakupiu (talk) 16:30, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

If there is substantial text, I'd say Coaches of X F.C. makes more sense. --Orange Mike | Talk 16:41, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
That was my gut feeling as well. Thank you for confirming it. Cheers. Parutakupiu (talk) 16:50, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Saving my searches

Hi there,

Maybe a simple question really, but how do i save the searches I have done.

Regards

Kyle — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kylebanks (talkcontribs) 16:42, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

We have no facility for saving any searches you may have done. This is more a function of your search engine; Wikipedia's own internal search engine is pretty barebones. --Orange Mike | Talk 17:18, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
I don't know if this is what you want, but if you want to have a link to a specific search (for example on your userpage), you can put the following url there
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?search=word1+word2+word3&title=Special%3ASearch
where you would replace word1, word2 and word3 with your search terms. For example, if you want to have a link to a search for water tree (this is just a made up example), you would put
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?search=water+tree&title=Special%3ASearch
on a page (note the words water and tree inside the URL). Please be aware however that this can yield different results each time you click on the link (for example if new articles have been created since the last time you clicked on the link and these articles are reckognized by Wikipedias search engine in the same search).
Apart from that I am with Orange Mike. Wikipedia's search engine doesn't contain any mechanism for remembering or saving any searches. -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 17:50, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Rio Pardo de Minas: a really empty place

I was wandering around in my normal chaotic fashion and noticed that the population density of Rio Pardo de Minas didn't agree with the given area and population. I went to the Portuguese article to see what it said. Its infobox states it has 35,000 inhabitants in 3118 km2, which according to its calculations, works out to 0.01 person per km2, just a leeetle bit low. I tried editing it, but couldn't find it. It appears to be something the template calculates. Could somebody give the Portuguese a heads up? Clarityfiend (talk) 21:41, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

I have fixed it in [2] by changing 35.000 to 35000. I think 35.000 is a valid way to write 35000 in Portuguese (see decimal mark) but the software interpreted it as 35 when the population density was calculated. When it rendered as 35,000 before my edit, this meant 35 in Portuguese notation. The problem was introduced in [3]. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:27, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse

The title of this institution is incorrect. CASA Columbia is NOT the Center for Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University. It is the NATIONAL Center for Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University. The Wikipedia page of founder Joseph Califano explicitly states this fact and " The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University" is hyperlinked. But when that page is pulled up, it switches to the wrong title. Can the title of the CASA Columbia page be corrected?

Done. I have also added several cleanup tags to the article, as it contains no references to WP:independent sources, no wikilinks, and is written in a promotional style. From reading it I wonder if it might in fact be a copyright violation, but though phrases such as "has assembled the professional skills and research" have several ghits, I suspect that many of these are quoting Wikipedia rather than the other way round. --ColinFine (talk) 22:02, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Help needed with inadvertent creation of Category

Hello. [edit] Numbered lists without the indent

This is nit-picking, but I'd like to get it right. I want to make a numbered list in a vertical navbox. The problem with Mediawiki's numbers lists (and HTML's) is that they add too much indent for the small space. I noticed that Mediawiki uses less indent for bulleted lists than numbered list; is there a way to make numbered list only as indented as bulleted lists? I tried typing the actual numbers and using line breaks, but the single-digits won't align with the double-digits. I tried putting the numbers in their own column in a table and making that column align=right, but then I can't have a sub-list within one of the items in the list. Is there another option that I havn't thought of? —Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 22:01, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Inaccessible article

I'm trying to view the article Comparison of e-book readers. Every time I attempt to go to that article, my browser hangs and I have to end the process with the Task Master. This has been going on for 24 hours, both with and without an immediate reboot. So far as I can determine, I can access all other articles.

First, can someone click on the comparison link above and tell me if the trouble is in my system or is this a problem with Wikipedia and/or the article itself? If it is my system, can anyone possibly tell me what I'm doing wrong? I'm running IE 8.0.6001.18702 on Windows XP-HE 5.1, SP3. I have 784,384 KB of memory. Thanks a lot. --RoyGoldsmith (talk) 00:15, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

In response to the first part of your query, I am able to load the page (Win7/Mozilla). I don't have much to offer on what the problem may be, but hopefully someone else will have a suggestion. Monty845 00:26, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
The excessively large tables employing a multitude of colors might be to blame, but that's just a guess because the page doesn't cause me problems on XP with the same version of IE8 with 2.16 GB of RAM (technically 4, but 2.16 is as much as XP can see). - Purplewowies (talk) 00:41, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
It works for me in IE9, both with and without compatibility mode (browser). The article has unusually wide sortable tables. Perhaps this is a problem. Try to disable Javascript before visiting the page. This makes tables non-sortable. You can also try to clear your entire cache. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:47, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
I've tried it on another PC with Win7/IE9 and it worked. I'll try your suggestions on the original PC when I get the chance. --RoyGoldsmith (talk) 00:52, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Location Error

I created this article called Teunis G. Bergen Elementary School, a school in New York. Then, when I was putting the geographic location using that GeoHack thingy, I put 40° 40′ 42.74″ N, 73° 57′ 58.88″ W. However, when I put it on the page and clicked the link to test it out, the location that it showed was 40° 40′ 42.74″ N, 73° 57′ 58.88″ E, having the original West at the end of the coordinates changed to an East. So then, I decided to just put 40° 40′ 42.74″ N, 73° 57′ 58.88″ E, and then when I clicked the link, it showed up as 40° 40′ 42.74″ N, 73° 57′ 58.88″ W, the correct place. Is there any way to fix this glitch and to have both show the proper coordinates? Thanks! Tboii99 00:40, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] International Autograph Auctions

I am trying to put a page onto the site, I have now been deleted 3 times and upon each occasion I have asked for some help as to why however the individual who has deleted me has not replied to any of my questions. Having used other pages as templates and followed your guidelines with specific reference to links and references I can not see a good reason why the contribution can't remain. Is there anyone who can help or are you guys just there to remove pages? Radavie (talk) 09:34, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi Radavie. Is the article in question Ian Sayer? In which case, it may have been previously deleted because it lacks sources - there's a huge amount of information, but only one source is provided, and there are no inline citations at all. Wikipedia content has to be verifiable - everything stated in the article has to have been previouslt published in a reliable source. Without such sources, subjects are judged to be non-notable, and thus not eligible for an entry in Wikipedia. Adding sources to the article and citing them in the article text should ensure that it doesn't get deleted again; certianly he seems notable from the article content. Yunshui  09:41, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
I think he's talking about International Autograph Auctions. This was speedy deleted because it seemed to be blatant advertising, which isn't allowed on Wikipedia. Articles on businesses need to be for non-promotional purposes, which means they need to be worded neutrally and meet the notability standard, and usually, the article shouldn't be created by an owner or employee of the business. Do you think your article met these requirements? Equazcion (talk) 09:46, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
[Edit clash] It seems that the page was "International Autograph Auctions". (I've therefore retitled your question accordingly, from "Help".) I quote, pretty much at random:
International Autograph Auctions have established a well deserved reputation for the authentication of material, the quality of material, realistic estimates and consistently high levels of sales with most auctions achieving between 85% and 95% of lots sold.
That sounds like advertising blurb to me. You'd have to demonstrate the near-impossible: (i) that it has a reputation for all these things, and (ii) that the reputation is well-deserved. Each assertion would require one or more disinterested, reliable source, and the source(s) for the latter would have to be independent of that/those for the former. Better skip the "well-deserved": Has it established such a reputation? If so, let's see the source(s) for this claim. You can work on the article in your sandbox; when you think it's ready, ask other editors to take a look at it.
But are you perchance related to International Autograph Auctions? If so, better read "WP:COI" -- and whether or not you are related, better read "WP:V" and the pages to which it links. -- Hoary (talk) 09:50, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

Yes, I see that you put a lot of work into the article "Ian Sayer", which is highly laudatory but virtually unsourced, and which interestingly says He is currently a consultant to Europe’s leading specialist autograph auction house, International Autograph Auctions Ltd , the British based company he helped to establish, with autograph expert Richard Davie, in 2005. -- Hoary (talk) 09:56, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

I wondered about your request for help. I found it, at Talk:International Autograph Auctions. It's interesting:

This page should not be speedily deleted because it is based exactly on other pages on the site such as Christies, Sothebys, Alexander Auctions and Kenneth Rendell. I have copied the format exactly from existing pages and simply can not understand how if this page is not permitted others are? I would love some help with regards to how I can phrase this so it is not an advertisement but no-one has been prepared to do this, could you possibly help me with regards to this as I am becoming increasingly frustrated? I understand that, if we are breaking a rule, we will be removed but when I have basically copied other pages and substituted words then this is unfair.

[My emphases.]

First, it's not just a matter of copying an existing format. (Indeed, it's not just a matter of copying an existing anything, as other stuff may be crap: see "Wikipedia:Other stuff exists".) You need to present material from/with a neutral point of view, and your assertions must be verifiable.

Secondly, I'm interested by your use of "we". Why do you say "we"? -- Hoary (talk) 10:06, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

Cisumegar (talk) 11:52, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

Yes, the advice is don't do it. Because you work for the subject of the article you stand in a conflict of interest. Our advice in such cases is invariably to leave it to uninvolved editors since it will be nearly impossible for you to write with neutral point of view which is one of our core content policies|. Your edit to the article was saved, but it was reverted by another editor a couple of days later. Please read the information on copyright on your talk page. I strongly suggest that you do not edit the article directly yourself, but restrict yourself to making suggestions on the article talk page and leave it to others to decide whether and how to include them.
I also note that your post suggests that two people are editing from the same account. This is strictly against Wikipeida rules, see WP:NOSHARE. All edits must be attributable to an individual person for licencing reasons. SpinningSpark 12:32, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

As so.....?

((Request Edit))

Paul Leonard-Morgan is a BAFTA-winning and Ivor Novello-nominated British composer, producer and artist known for composing for television and film (Limitless, Dredd, Spooks).

He was nominated for a World Soundtrack Discovery Award 2011 for his soundtrack to Limitless.

He won a BAFTA for his first film soundtrack, Pineapple. He scored the ITV drama Fallen, which was nominated for a BAFTA as well as an Ivor Novello award. Leonard-Morgan composed series 5-10 of the BBC spy drama Spooks (MI5 in US). He was nominated for a BAFTA for the score to series 7. He scored the 2011 film Limitless, starring Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro. The film was directed by Neil Burger and was the Box Office No 1 in both the UK and US, taking in more than $160 million worldwide.

Leonard-Morgan completed the soundtrack for the upcoming film ‘Dredd’, directed by Peter Travis (Vantage Point) from a script by Alex Garland (The Beach, 28 Days Later, Sunshine), and starring Karl Urban and Olivia Thirlby. Dredd is due for worldwide release in September 2012.

He graduated from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.

Leonard-Morgan has worked with artists including Snow Patrol, Belle and Sebastian, Craig Armstrong, Texas, Nada Surf, The Young Knives, Mogwai and Joy Zipper.

Leonard-Morgan has collaborated with ex-Belle and Sebastian cellist and singer Isobel Campbell on all her albums, including her Mercury Prize nominated album Ballad Of The Broken Seas, on which she collaborated with Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees). Most recently Paul worked with Mogwai on their latest album “Hardcore Will Never Die But You Will”.

In 2005, Leonard-Morgan was commissioned to compose the music for the official launch ceremony of The Freedom Towers, the designs that will replace the Twin Towers at Ground Zero.

In 2007, Leonard-Morgan was selected by the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) to compose a new US Olympic anthem, previously scored by composer John Williams. The anthem was launched at the US Olympic headquarters in Colorado Springs on September 11, 2007, with Leonard-Morgan performing it live at the Colorado Springs Concert Hall.

His album, Filmtales, was released in 2008 to critical acclaim and features collaborations with Isobel Campbell, Richard Colburn (Belle and Sebastian), Steve Mason (Beta Band), Esther O’Connor and Jenna Gibbons (Shapeshifters). It also features the US Olympic Anthem, Glory of Pursuit.

Cisumegar (talk) 14:53, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

As stated above, you need to make the suggestion at Talk:Paul Leonard-Morgan. Furthermore, you will need to support the suggestion with references to independent reliable sources. Finally there is a difference between {{Request edit}} and ((Request Edit)). The shape of the brackets is significant in Wikipedia syntax. David Biddulph (talk) 15:17, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

The article Janko Konstantinov first appeared on WP in July of 2010. It remains a stub, but I can find nothing in it that should be objectionable, and certainly nothing with profanity in it. What am I missing? Bielle (talk) 17:44, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
This is the encyclopedia Wikipedia. Are you referring to some other website or publication? See Wikipedia:No legal threats. Maybe she means http://lohere.net/kulkapedia/samuel/Janko_Konstantinov . It is such a mess (automating obscenity adding(?)) that I don't know whether it violates the rules for copying Wikipedia content or not.Naraht (talk) 20:49, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
That sounds like a good guess. The profanity at the site has nothing to do with Wikipedia. The site has a false "CONTACT US" link which leads to Wikipedia but we are not responsible for that site. I don't know how you can contact them. They also make a false claim to be a Wikimedia project by displaying http://bits.wikimedia.org/images/wikimedia-button.png. It can damage the reputation of the Wikimedia Foundation and I will contact Wikimedia's General Counsel. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:44, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] My picture question

Hello, I have recently received a warning on my talk page for adding a possibly copyrighted image. I am keen not to be doing this, but I fear I am misunderstanding how to find pictures on Flickr which are fair use? That image: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ambertq/2956069887/sizes/l/in/photostream/ claims to be creative commons licenced - is this not ok for use on Wikipedia? Please let me know as I am keen to have a picture of April the Tapir on the article, and I don't want to infringe copyright or get any more warnings if possible! Thanks! Anthony J Pintglass (talk) 17:44, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

To follow-up, because that image was a nice one, I have had success, on occasion, talking to the photographer and getting them to change the rights. If you let them know it is for Wikipedia, and their name will show up on the image page, they might be willing to make the change. That particular image is available in multiple sizes, so they might be willing to change the license for one of them to a conforming license. --SPhilbrick(Talk) 18:05, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] RfC Help

It seems helpdesk questions are brief so I will keep mine brief as well. I'm wading into new territory for me, as I've never made an RfC before, and I want to make an RfC, but first I'd like to work with an Admin 1-on-1 to a) get their feedback on whether an RfC is appropriate, b)framing it succinctly which I am having trouble doing, and c)if kosher, talk with me about my specific concerns before posting it. It's about Wikipedia policy, touching on a lot of different issues: WP:AfD, WP:EVENT, WP:NOTNEWSPAPER, WP:MMANOT, and has devolved into a complicated mess, with a lot of players but without inappropriate user conduct (for the most part). There seems to be no online admins with a "dispute" checkmark at WP:HAU except for one who is slightly involved. Can someone drop me a line on my talk page? Apologies if I am not using the help desk correctly. Mreleganza (talk) 18:09, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Copyright Questions About Article and Photographs

To: Help Desk,

I am a digital artist and have a several questions about the copyright on the Dorothea Lange page and her photographs that were published in Wikipedia. Let me give you the information first about my problem that my questions will be based on.

Two years ago in March during Historical Month for Women, I wrote a post with photographs, using Wikipedia as my resource( here is the link that I used: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorothea_Lange ) and published it on my blog about Dorothea Lange. I wrote it in my own words as to not plagerize the author who wrote the article in Wikipedia or to plagerize the works of Wikipedia that are published concerning the photographs of Dorothea Lange. At the bottom of the post, I added two links from Wikipedia to give Wikipedia the credit for where the article was found, where I got my information, and also where the photographs where found that I placed in the post.

Here is the link to the post that I published on--1artgirl (talk) 19:56, 2 May 2012 (UTC) my blog site about Dorothea Lange: http://freetrinketstreasures.blogspot.com/2010/03/march-is-womens-history-month_25.html

Here are the links I put at the end of the Dorothea Lange post to give Wikipedia the proper credit concerning the article information and where the photographs were located:

article: http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Dorothea_Lange pictures: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Dorothea_Lange

I posted this two years ago and since then I have become a member of Digital Whisper.ning and our group will be publishing our first edion of the Digital Whisper magazine at the end of this month. When the administrators of our group sent out a call for art work to be submitted for publication, I sent four digital art pieces to them that I created from 9 of the photographs from the Dorothea Lange post that I published in March 2010 (link above).

When I sent the art work to them, I had to get the links of the 9 photgragh to also send to them so that they can credit Wikipedia as to where I got the photographs to create my art work as well as to identify that the material I used to create the art is in public domain and copyright free. When I looked up the links to the photographs, I discovered that the page had been modified and that over 2,300 pictures that didn't exist when I published the post, exist now and with more inforamtion about copyright concerning ownership of the photographs. The photographs that I used for the art work had the Creative Commons logo and are also established by the Library of Congress as being in public domain.

As I understand this---freely licensed media is within public domain and can be used for personal use, right? As I understand your policies concerning copyright, I read that photographs established in the Creative Commons files and also from the Library of Congress are in Public Domain and are for personal use. Am I right about this? So by these two definitions of the Creative Commons and Lbrary of Congress, the photographs that I used were okay to alter in digital form and can be sent for possible publication? Or by personal use, does this mean tht I can use the photgraphs for personal use but as far as sending them for submission to be published would change the personal use into a different catagory of commercial use and gain and therefore prohibited by the copyright laws of Wikipedia even thought they have the Creative Commons and the Library of Congress logos and both say they are in pubic domain? In other words, can photographs used from public domain sources be used for commercial gain without harming the copyright laws of Wikipedia?

And what about the photographs that are filed under the links: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._National_Archives_and_Records_Administration and http://www.loc.gov/pictures/item/fsa1998018448/PP/ under the U. S. Farm Security Administration? Are the photographs also in pulic domain and also copyright free and therefore available on Wikipedia as for personal use and or commercial use, as in my case using photographs to create art work to be pulished in a art magazine?

My second problem with the photographs I used for my art work from Dorothea Lange is about what I mentioned in the above paragraph about the material being updated a year after I wrote the post. Two new links was posted to some of the photograghs,(1)owner of the Dorothea Lange slide ngatives: U.S. Farm Security Administrations, (2) U. S. National Archives and Records Administation. I read that most of the images from both of these government places are classified as in public domain and for personal use but proper credit must be given to the NARA and the FSA.

So have I understood these policies correctly? Also what kind of personal use are they referring to in their description of public domain ad non-restrictions of images? Does this mean that even if they are catagorized as files coming from the NARa or the FAS as long as they are in the Commons Creative files they are in pubic domain and are copyright free and therefore to be used in personal use or as in my case to be published in digital altered art form in a art magazine?

Can you look at the public use information identified in the description of the 9 photographs that I used for my art work and let me know If I have yoru permission to use them in digital art and for publication? The Digital Whisper administrators want to publish my work but they are in question of the copyright of the photographs that I have usd. Can we get a clear, cut answer from you that it the 9 photographs I used are in public domain and cpoyright free and can be used for personal use or commercial gain to be published in the Digital Whisper Magazizne? Of course, proper credit would be given from where each photgraph came from and links probvided for any information used from Wikipdeia. They also want to publish the post I wrote along with the pictures that I posted with the article concerning Dorothea Lange. Will you look at the post and tell me if this can also be published in the Digital Whisper magazine with credits going to Wikipedia as well as proper credits to the photgraphs used?

Here are the links for the nine photographs that I used for my art work:

I will answer the Dorothea Lange part of your request first and then take a look at your other requests later,
  • All nine of the images you have listed are claimed to be public domain on their Commons pages. You can use public domain material however you see fit, although it would be polite to say where you got it.
  • The text of Wikipedia article is licenced under CC-BY-SA. Read the page for the full conditions, but basically you must do two things if you use Wikipedia text. You must credit the authors of the article and you must licence your derivative work in the same manner. Crediting the authors is commonly done by providing a hyperlink back to the original article. If you cannot provide a link you can find a list of the contributers on the "history" tab of the article (which may be very long). However, if you have only used Wikipedia as a source and written in your own words then there is no copyright issue, although you may still want to list Wikipedia amongst your sources. Note that the links on your blog do not go to the Wikipedia article. They go to the Commons category page for her.
  • I do not understand what page you mean that has 2,300 photographs. It sounds like a higher level Commons category. Can you link to it? SpinningSpark 22:57, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

--1artgirl (talk) 03:15, 5 May 2012 (UTC)TO: SpinningSpark THE ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION ABOVE: Yes, you can link to it---first, click on to this link: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Dorothea_Lange and then go down the page to this: Subcategories: This category has the following 2 subcategories, out of 2 total. L [×] Migrant Mother by Dorothea Lange‎ (1 P, 12 F) *******This is the 1st link to click on!!!!!!

M [×] Photographs by Dorothea Lange of Manzanar War Relocation Center‎ (457 F) *********This is the 2nd link to click on!!!!!

PAGES IN CATEGORY "Dorothea Lange" The following 2 pages are in this category, out of 2 total. Dorothea Lange Creator:Dorothea Lange Media in category "Dorothea Lange" The following 201 files are in the current category. (previous 200) (next 200) This is where the 2,300 files are found in 200 images per page!!!!!Thanks for answering so quickly!!! I appreciate that very much!!!--1artgirl (talk) 03:05, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

You can find the licence for any picture on Wikipedia by clicking on it. This will take you to the item's description page. Scroll down and either under "Licences" or "Permission" you will find the licence or a statement that it is public domain. Works by all US federal government employees made in the course of their duties are automatically public domain no matter which agency they work for. Images which are not public domain on Wikipedia are mostly licenced with a Collective Commons licence, the same as the text. But be cautious, there are some that do not have a free licence and every picture must be checked individually. SpinningSpark 23:08, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
[Commons:Category:Dorothea_Lange]] includes 2317 files, so yes, that's probably what the poster intended. That's a substantial fraction of her 3900 images in that collection at the LoC. Each one used should be checked, but the LoC cataloguing indicates the FSA images usage rights. LeadSongDog come howl! 05:25, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

--1artgirl (talk) 03:15, 5 May 2012 (UTC)Lead Song Dog---What does LoC mean? What does it stand for?--1artgirl (talk) 03:08, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

--1artgirl (talk) 03:16, 5 May 2012 (UTC)MORE QUESTIONS ABOUT COPYRIGHT!! So in other words, I can use these 9 images as long as I correctly give a credit for each one to Wikipedia and also to where they came from for example: correctly give license #number if they are from the NARA, along with the link as to what page they were found in Wikipedia Creative Commons, correct?

Okay---so tell me about the FAS!! I don't understand what their copyright policies are as far as the slides of Dorothea Lange and the pictures that you have in that file of 2,300 that were stated as <This is a retouched picture, which means that it has been digitally altered from its original version. Modifications: Color added using the GIMP. The original can be viewed here: Lange-MigrantMother02.jpg.> Except for the Gimp part, the other FSA phtographs wre in black and white---still---the credentials say at the bottom of the page of licensing that (they have been altered from the original version) because the original version is on slide negatives so if they (the photographs found in the Creative Commons link in Wikipedia with the 2,300 and some other black and white images) have been re-altered from those slides then the images have to be considered public domain and copyright free, correct?

Also another question concerning the post from my blog that will be published: I didn't give but one credit and that was to Wikipeda where the article can be found (correct link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorothea_Lange and also? the person that wrote the article for Wikipedia) so where do I find the name of the person who published this article to Wikipedia and responsible for the information in the article so I can credit them properly? Also,I am confused about one other thing---What about the pictures that are not on the page of the article that I used from the Creative Commons section of images in the post? Do I credit each photograph from the file that I got it from (the page where the image is shown in the Creative Commons file) and then also the license number from the other files that contributed, for example: the NARA and also the FSA?--1artgirl (talk) 02:54, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Adminship questions

I have two questions about adminship:

  1. If an editor has read up on the RfA process and guidelines/criteria but is still unsure if they're ready for RfA, is there some sort of preparation? Like a peer review before FAC, but for people?
  2. Would it be dumb to request adminship if (assuming you passed) you knew you were going to have to take a long wikibreak/semi-wikibreak after becoming an admin?

I'm not planning on requesting to be an admin anytime soon, even though I asked the second question as though I were (I won't have regular internet access for the summer). These questions are, at this point, largely out of curiosity. Thanks for any input. - Purplewowies (talk) 00:37, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Editor review should serve your purposes nicely. I think if you just plan on being away for a summer that's no big deal, but in that case, why wouldnt you wait? Equazcion (talk) 00:42, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
Oh, I would wait. It was just a random, burning thought/question that ran through my mind. Thanks for answering my questions. :) - Purplewowies (talk) 05:28, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Moving test page from my sandbox to mainspace

I drafted a new Wiki article using my user sandbox, then followed the steps to move the article to the mainspace.

There is now a redirect on my user sandbox page to the new article that I moved to the mainspace. Is this just temporary? I wanted to create a new standalone article in the mainspace, not just redirect it from my sandbox.

This is all the text that my user sandbox now contains: #REDIRECT Carl Bass

This is the page that I moved into the mainspace: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Bass

Please help. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JNorman704 (talkcontribs) 02:14, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

The article now exists in mainspace; the redirect is left over from the page move and you can remove the redirect code from the sandbox page.--ukexpat (talk) 02:20, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
(edit conflict) A page move automatically creates a redirect at the old title. It remains if an editor doesn't change it. You can remove the redirect code and use the sandbox for other purposes. This will have no effect on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Bass. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:22, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

Is it reasonable for someone to delete almost the entire content of my talk and user pages? Admittedly most of it could go, but it seems somewhat rude to me. Possibly has somthing to do with the fact that my user name is Kwerty and he's (or she's) set up as Kwerty2!!? Kwerty (talk) 02:52, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

Seems odd to me, especially with no explanation in the edit history or on the page itself. You should leave a message on that user's talk page asking for an explanation, and if that doesn't work undo the changes. RudolfRed (talk) 02:57, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
Special:Log/Kwerty2 shows the account was created 1 minute before it started the deletions in your userspace, and afterwards it posted Happy "The crap is gone" to Special:FeedbackDashboard/31649. It looks like either vandalism or a mistake where Kwerty2 thought it was their own userspace which was prefilled when the account was created. Ask them. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:30, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Logging in.

Hi, I edited a page but I didn't realize I wasn't logged in. It gave me a warning about my IP address, are there "Dangerous Consequences" to having it publicly displayed?

Dartpaw86 (talk) 11:11, 3 May 2012 (UTC)Dartpaw86

Don't worry about it. It's not important in almost all circumstances. If your ISP gives you a new IP address each time you connect to the internet, or you access via school or university or a corporate network or any kind of proxy network where the IP address is shared, then it's not going to damage your privacy - people may be able to tell roughly where the edit was made from, but there's no way to identify you without access to private logs from your ISP/school/college/company. If you have a fixed IP which is yours alone (which some ISPs will make available) then the edit might be traced to you (if there is information elsewhere online identifying your IP address), but most people don't have this.
But in practice, nobody is going to bother, even if they know your IP address. What use is it to anyone to know you edited an article on topic X? There are a vast number of IP addresses in Wikipedia's histories, and the very very vast majority of them haven't suffered at all from this. The only exception is that if you're breaking the law, or violating the policies of whoever's giving you internet access, they'll be able to locate you more easily.
You may be able in certain circumstances to have your IP address removed from the edit history; see Wikipedia:CBLANK#Partial_deletion and Wikipedia:Revision deletion. But normally this is not necessary. --13:13, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

Occasionally a registered editor will edit while logged out. While not usually an egregious issue, there can be some concerns about attribution and privacy.

  • If you made an edit without logging in, you cannot go back and directly tie that edit to your account. If your desire to account for the edit overrides your desire for anonymity, you can log in, make a dummy edit, and add a note in the edit summary about the previous edit.
  • If you make a comment on a talk page without logging in, then your signature will include your IP address. You can log in and edit the comment by replacing the signature. Be aware that the WikiScanner tool will retrieve these actions from the database and record them at the Poor Man's Checkuser, thus connecting your username and IP address.
  • If you feel that the connection between the IP address and your username is an issue, then you can request that the edit be removed; see Wikipedia:Oversight#Policy and Wikipedia:Requests for oversight.
  • Wikipedia does show a message box when an unregistered or logged out user edits a page. This may not be obvious— as a visual reminder you can make the Save page button green when logged in by adding this rule to either Special:MyPage/skin.css or Special:MyPage/common.css:
/* Turn the "Save page" button green when logged in */
INPUT#wpSave {
    background-color:#88ff88;

Perhaps the wizards at WP:Village pump (technical) will be able to help you. Roger (talk) 12:08, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Email issue

Hi, I received an email when a page on my watchlist was changed, but "E-mail me when a page on my watchlist is changed" was not checked in my preferences. Why is this and how can I stop future emails of this sort? SpencerT♦C 21:11, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

It was a bad server setting for 16 minutes. It has been fixed. See Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Watchlist notification emails. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:16, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
Alright, thanks! SpencerT♦C 04:37, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Personalized editing dropdown boxes

Hello. In My preferences, in the gadgets tab, I have the option to "Add two new dropdown boxes below the edit summary box with some useful default summaries" checked, and I was wondering if it is possible to create another personalized dropdown box that contains different edit summaries. Thanks, JJJ (talk) 22:23, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

The code is at MediaWiki:Gadget-defaultsummaries.js. If you don't know much JavaScript then perhaps the easiest is: Disable the gadget in preferences. Copy MediaWiki:Gadget-defaultsummaries.js to User:TheJJJunk/Gadget-defaultsummaries.js. Edit it to add your own choices in the code to one of the two existing dropdown boxes (you can probably guess how). Add importScript('User:TheJJJunk/Gadget-defaultsummaries.js'); to Special:Mypage/skin.js. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:51, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. I just didn't know where to find the code. --JJJ (talk) 23:58, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
I found the code at Special:Gadgets. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:02, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Research papers

Are there any policies or guidance documents regarding adding of material from research papers into articles? The papers I am looking at are not medical related, hard science or maths. Dlv999 (talk) 23:38, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

The main policy would be "Wikipedia:Identifying reliable sources". The most important factor is likely to be whether they were published, and if so, by whom. Jc3s5h (talk) 00:01, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
Did you mean copy it in verbatim? In that case WP:COPYVIO is relevant. Or perhaps you are concerned about the paper's relevance, in which case you might want to consider WP:UNDUE and WP:FRINGE. SpinningSpark 01:48, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
No intention to copy in verbatim. The papers are published, but one of the journals charges for publishing [4], and it is not clear that the Journal is entirely relevant to the topic of the paper. The second paper involved an activist organisation, again it was published, but I would like to find out what sort of policies are available to judge if the research is bona fida and suitable for addition to the encyclopedia.
Just on a side note, I read a lot of medical research papers at college and from what I know taking a single paper and reporting the results would not give an accurate picture of any particular research area. It would be relatively easy to cherry pick a single paper that would suite a particular POV but would not be representative picture of overall research. Dlv999 (talk) 12:06, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Multiple issues tag

After an article has been improved and the issues have been fixed how does one get rid of the tag and the box at the top of the page? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_L._Komaroff

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.109.39.177 (talk) 21:49, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

...Well, personally, looking at the article, I don't really believe those issues are solved. But the tag is transcluded at the top of the page like so: {{Multiple issues|BLP sources = April 2012|orphan = April 2012|primary sources = April 2012}}. - Purplewowies (talk) (How's my driving?) 22:22, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Edit summary search

I thought it was possible to do a search for words in edit summaries. Does anyone know if/how I can do that? Specifically I want to search for the phrase "added wikify tag using AWB". Ryan Vesey Review me! 00:27, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

If you are hoping to search the edit summaries of one user's edits, then this tool is the one you need. A search for "added wikify tag using AWB" won't work, though, because AWB uses wikilinks for parts of its edit summaries, and uses "tags" rather than "tag" when it adds more than one in the same edit. I suggest you search for just [[WP:WFY|wikify]] - Example search. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:05, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, too bad there isn't one that searches all recent edits, but this will be useful. Thanks again Ryan Vesey Review me! 13:08, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] how to edit the title of Employees?

I would like to edit the title of Employees to Team members for the company -- Global Sources (in the box at the up right corner). But it seems Employees is a default (?) title as I have tried to change it though unsuccessful...

Any ways that I can do such edit? Many thanks for your kind attention.

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Gscmhk (talkcontribs) 04:28, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

Templates only display parameters set in the template, not additions where the template is included. You could suggest the change at Template talk:Infobox company, but while key people might be notable and encyclopedic, it's difficult to see how employees would be. Dru of Id (talk) 04:57, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
In other words, the title you're trying to change is permanently set for all company pages, so you won't be able to change it. The title you want would be company promotion anyway -- companies have employees, while "team members" is more of a buzzword. It seems this user has been blocked for promotion anyway though. Equazcion (talk) 05:02, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
I have tagged the article concerned Global Sources for doubtful notability. Roger (talk) 09:26, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 3.9 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck.--Orange Mike | Talk 12:37, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

There is no reason you should not be able to edit that page. Perhaps you problem is that you cannot find an edit link like there are next to the section headings? To edit items in the lede section of an article you must click the "edit this page" tab at the top of the page. This will open an edit window for the whole article instead of just one individual section. SpinningSpark 13:57, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
The op couldn't make the corrections since the vandalism from 30 April had already been reverted, and was seeing the previous version. The other requested changes are in the infobox, and may not have used the top row tab. Dru of Id (talk) 14:05, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
...And they've now made the changes. Dru of Id (talk) 14:07, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
One more point, JenniferMyers17: it is not "our Valley Forge Military Academy & College page", and if you think it is you should probably read conflict of interest. You'll see that correcting verifiable factual information is generally fine, but you will need to be more cautious about any other edits to the article. --ColinFine (talk) 15:30, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
Unfortunately, that article shows all the earmarks of a walled garden long tended by COI accounts. It's poorly formatted, filled with smarm and braggartry and microscopic bits of trivia about non-notable alumni and cadet ranks (past and present) and the like. It needs cleanup, including purging and wikification and restoration of NPOV.
Agreed. Wentworth Military Academy and College, which is the other private Junior Military Academy in the template at the bottom looks in much better shape. While certainly not up to GA standards, I think using the WMAC article as a guide would be several steps in the right direction.Naraht (talk) 21:00, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

You are not "the main admin for this page": see WP:OWN. Furthermore, I guess you are associated with the company: if so, you must read WP:COI because you have a conflict of interest. If there are changes you want made to the page, suggest them on the talk page, Talk:GDF SUEZ Energy Resources NA. The most important thing you can do is to provide citations to independent reliable sources for the information in the article. --ColinFine (talk) 15:57, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] List of articles in a WikiProject

Hi, is there an easy way to look up the "list of articles" in a Wikiproject? Or at least the list of key articles? If the list of categories can be found, then those lead to the articles anyway in most cases. Thanks. History2007 (talk) 17:45, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

Every WikiProject has an associated category that lists all articles that have been included in the project by having the Project's template placed on the talk page - "Category:WikiProject Foobar articles". Roger (talk) 18:16, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

@69.7.49.193 - The chances of User:Marleau ever seeing this question here is very small. You should post your request to User talk:Marleau or on the article's Talk page - Talk:Colette Boky where all contributors that have the page watchlisted would see it. Roger (talk) 06:30, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Graphics Questions

I have a picture of a bird that I think is better than the current picture used. I don’t want to offend the person who took the original picture by replacing it. Is there a protocol used to evaluate the pictures and use one or the other by consensus, or do I just replace the picture? Also, I have uploaded pictures of birds before, and on them are the species name, date and place taken, as birds may look different during different times of the year, and in different locations. When I uploaded the picture with this data on it, someone edited it off of the picture (more than once). I feel this is important information that needs to be part of the picture, and not lost if the picture is re-copied out of wiki commons. Is there a policy about not having any typed data directly visible on pictures? BBODO (talk) 01:17, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

Yes, the preference is to not include any text on the photo, see WP:IMAGES. As for suggesting a new photo, I think you would upload the photo to commons, and then use the article's talk page to suggest a new one, and see what others think (or, just be bold and make the change if you think its better) RudolfRed (talk) 01:26, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia main page problem

Dear Sir/Madam,

As a honorary user of wikipedia, everyday i check on the main page for interesting news and articles including the "on this day" section. Today is a world known day of Vesak Full Moon poya day. It is the day that Lord Buddha was born, became enlightenment, and passed away. Just want to know why such an important day is not mentioned in the "on this day" section.

Thanking you, Sanjaya.... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 112.135.75.236 (talk) 02:11, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

The problem is that the "On this day..." section refers to historical events based on Gregorian calendar date. Vesak is based on the lunar calendar and falls on a different date each year. It is also a holiday, rather than a historical date and is not exactly appropriate for this section. --Daniel 03:25, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Image

I plan on uploading an image located here, problem is I don't know the license, and other images, such as File:Kwik-e-mart-7-11.jpg, are similar, is there a license i could use to upload — Preceding unsigned comment added by TBrandley (talkcontribs)

That image has no licensing information and since you don't know its status, you are required to assume it's non-freely copyrighted. The 7-11-Simpsons photograph was uploaded by the person who took the photograph, so they were the copyright owner and therefore had authority to freely-license it or release it into the public domain. You have no such authority. There is also fair use, which allows us to use certain images even though they remain non-free and copyrighted, but you have to meet all of the requirements of Non-free content criteria and here, surely you cannot meet criteria 1 for no free equivalent, because anyone can go and take a photograph tomorrow. Therefore, a free equivalent could easily be created. In short, I don't see any way you can validly upload that image unless you have verifiable information that it is actually freely licensed or in the public domain.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 03:19, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
Wow, serendipity. I see you created the article Fugget About It:-)--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 03:27, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
I took a look for a suitably freely-licensed image you could upload to the Commons, but only found this, which I don't think is what you're looking for.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 03:53, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] BIOGRAPHICAL ARTICLE WITH INCORRECT INFORMATION AND PLAGIARIZED MATERIAL

Dear Wikipedia,

I re-edited and updated an incorrect and partially plagiarized article about me on your page. Your 'Editor', PBurka, deleted my changes (which were accurate, cited references, and contained updates about the last thirty years of my career, and removed inaccurate and potentially damaging material.) Portions of the original article were taken out of context from an interview on my blog and are potentially very harmful to me.

If you do not replace my changes and ask PBurka to please allow them to stand, I request that the entire article be removed. I do not approve of the material or the writing.

Very truly yours Nancy Beiman — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.23.254.221 (talk) 08:21, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

It looks like you have a conflict of interest here. There is no prohibition in editing articles about yourself, but there are restrictions. I see the article had to be tagged with a conflict of interest tag. AndieM (Am I behaving?) 09:07, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
