Atheist Solidarity Day - June 21- An Atheist Holiday

An atheist holiday. It's a global and annual day to stand up together as one and provide support for those who struggle to be non-religious in their communities. It's a day of celebration for those who have the freedom to be open about their beliefs while at the same time raising awareness about those who don't have that freedom. There are many around the world who have to hide their beliefs because of social pressures, taboos, threat of violence, and even death. Everywhere there are people who have to hide out of necessity. It ultimately is a day of protest, celebration, and awareness raising.

This day will be a day where atheists around the world wear something that identifies themselves as an atheist. As we get more and more publicity every year it will be easier and easier for others to stand out and express themselves.

On June 21 people will be paying more attention
to the repercussions that some may suffer identifying themselves as an atheist. It will be a day that when repercussions happen atheists around the globe will stand up and demand it end. On this day we'll write letters to the media, we'll protest, we'll make it more well known, we'll cast an eye on those who oppress. To be successful publicity is important. It's a day to party and be responsible. Create awareness in clever ways. Have a party in a public place and invite the public. Run a fundraiser in the community. Do anything to get more people to see that atheists are just like everyone else. Do things to break the stereotypes people may have. Be fun and show your community what you think is important.

Ideas on ways to identity yourself: get something from http://store.richarddawkins.net/ (proceeds to go to a non-profit foundation), or from http://www.cafepress.ca/atheistday , wear a goofy costume and makeup, make signs, anything to identify yourself as atheist.

This day belongs to everyone. No one controls it or its agenda. It will take it's own path. Hopefully every year more and more people will celebrate this day. Feel free to use this facebook page to organize local events. Just post your location as a topic in discussions. Offer ideas. Join this group. Encourage others to join. Write about it in your blog. Promote this day everywhere.

Eventually this day could be a day were all atheists stand up in solidarity worldwide in order to help more come out to those around them. Together we can help change the world where eventually atheists everywhere can stand up fearless and celebrate our freedom every June 21. This event nicely compliments World Humanist Day. REMEMBER that this day will only be successful if many groups participate. If you see an atheist/humanist group that isn't participating, write a quick email encouraging them to do something that day. It only takes 5 minutes and can make a big difference!!! ‘A’ Week on Facebook

Those of you with a Facebook account may be noticing another viral trend on the site this week.  Some of your friends are going to disappear and be replaced by a scarlet letter. No, not that scarlet letter. They are going to be switching their profile pictures with a red A on a black field which has been chosen as the symbol for atheist awareness week. 

Although the number of people who report that they have no religion has been steadily growing over the years, the number of peop

le who are willing to clearly identify as atheist or agnostic is still very small.  In 2008, the most recent year for which statistics are available, the American Religious Identification Survey reported that approximately 15% of those surveyed said they had no religion. That’s almost 35 million Americans. Yet only about .7% identified as atheist and .9% as agnostic, which together make up just 3.5 million people. So why are so many people without religion hesitant to identify as atheist or agnostic?

The topic will be the little charity group I helped to create recently. "Atheists Helping the Homeless" is the unique new charity run by Atheists in Austin, Texas. We help homeless people here by giving them free care packages of toiletries, gloves, socks, a hot cup of coffee, and a little food. My Reason to Relay

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is more than just an event to me. It is my personal opportunity to help save lives from cancer by supporting the American Cancer Society.

It's amazing to think that millions of people will be diagnosed with cancer this year. Somebody close to us may be one of them.

But, by taking part in Relay, I am helping the American Cancer Society save lives by:

• Helping people stay well by helping them take steps to prevent cancer or detect it early, when it’s most treatable
• Helping people get well by being in their corner around the clock to guide them through every step of their cancer experience
• Finding cures by funding groundbreaking research that helps us understand cancer’s causes, determine how best to prevent it and discover new ways to cure it
• Fighting back by working with lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and rally communities worldwide to join the fight

Please support my efforts by making a donation or by joining my Relay For Life team. Together, we have the power to help create a world where cancer can no longer claim another year of anyone’s life.

Our Reason to Relay

A 2007 Gallup poll found that 53% of Americans

would not vote for an atheist for president.

The commonly held belief, here in the USA, that atheists, agnostics, secular humanists and the non-religious in general lack moral beliefs and a moral framework in their lives is distressing and harmful. Many atheists, agnostics, secular humanists and non religious people have a carefully thought out personal moral code that stresses honesty, integrity, care for others and critical thinking. Many of us care very deeply indeed about the communities in which we live. We don't feel that it is necessary to believe in a God in order to behave in ways that show love and care towards others. We don't believe that people will only do the right thing when they are "forced" to do the right thing by the imposition of an external moral code.

The trip involves two student groups: the Students for Freethought & The Thomas Society at Ohio State. The Thomas Society is a Christian organization. Heading down March 20-26, staying at a church, and working through Americorps.

The idea is basically to get people to not only help people in the New Orleans area get back into their homes, but to get atheists and Christians talking to each other, and finding common ground. It really helps people to understand what others believe and why they believe it. We did this trip last year as well and it was a huge success.

The Thomas Society

Ok, race fans, this is the week. The week that either I make PZ cry or he makes me weep. One of the two.

Anyway, for those of you not following along, The Thomas Society and the Students for Free Thought at Ohio State are going to take a trip to New Orleans this spring break. We are going to be building houses, hanging out together and learning from each other. Along those lines, we need to raise some money to pay for gas, food and other expenses for the trip.

So, we are going to have a blog tv event this Saturday at 9:oo PM Eastern. The Amazing Atheist, a New Orleans Atheist, has graciously agreed to host the event on his very large blog channel. Not only are we raising money for New Orleans, but for a non for profit in New Orleans called “Common Ground“.

What do we have planned for this event? Oh, all kinds of atheist/christian goodness. First, we will have the PZ/preacher event. Then, we will have giveaways such as a signed edition of Ray Comfort’s debacle and a promised signed copy of my novel. Not to mention the special guests like Hemant Mehta, atheist vidbloggers like ZOMgitscriss, and Keith Jensen, the atheist comedian from the Coexist comedy tour.

So, come, watch, ask questions and give money. See PZ cry. Cry, PZ, Cry.

Group organizes to be 'good without God'

Nonbelievers telling others they're not alone

Teresa Cherry was out running errands when she saw the question floating over Interstate 95.

"Are you good without God?" the electronic billboard asked. "Millions are."

The Baltimore woman does not believe in the existence of a supreme being. And in that moment, she did not feel so alone.

"My friend and I were just discussing a few days ago whether or not there was a community of others like us in Baltimore," said the 28-year-old Cherry, a student at the Community College of Baltimore County. Checking out the Web site advertised on the billboard, she said, "we found out that there are some local groups, and it's exciting to me."

Which is just what the Baltimore Coalition of Reason wants. The new organization, a collection of atheists, agnostics and others, is introducing itself to the area this week with a billboard campaign aimed at reaching out to nonbelievers while telling the rest of the community that goodness is possible without godliness.

"Sometimes people have negative stereotypes or impressions about people who are atheist or agnostic," local coordinator Emil Volcheck said. "They think that just because they don't believe in God that somehow they're not good people."

Baltimore becomes the latest target of a national campaign, funded by an anonymous businessman from Philadelphia, intended to join atheists, agnostics, humanists, freethinkers and other nonbelievers - a diverse lot, not universally inclined toward organization - into something resembling a community, and one that ultimately could wield the sort of social, cultural and political power now enjoyed by the larger religious denominations.

The best thing about saying THANK GOODNESS in place of THANK GOD is that there really are lots of ways of repaying your debt to goodness—by setting out to create more of it, for the benefit of those to come. Goodness comes in many forms, not just medicine and science. Thank goodness for the music of, say, Randy Newman, which could not exist without all those wonderful pianos and recording studios, to say nothing of the musical contributions of every great composer from Bach through Wagner to Scott Joplin and the Beatles. Thank goodness for fresh drinking water in the tap, and food on our table. Thank goodness for fair elections and truthful journalism. If you want to express your gratitude to goodness, you can plant a tree, feed an orphan, buy books for schoolgirls in the Islamic world, or contribute in thousands of other ways to the manifest improvement of life on this planet now and in the near future....

Good Without God: What a Billion Nonreligious People Do Believe

An inspiring and provocative exploration of an alternative to traditional religion by the Humanist chaplain at Harvard University With the current state of the economy, the ongoing wars that rage across the globe, and the unsettling changes to the earth's climate, questions about the role of God and religion in world affairs have never been more relevant or felt more powerfully. Many of us are searching for a place where we can find not only facts and scientific reason but also hope and the moral courage needed to overcome such challenges.
