Americans United for Separation of Church and State invites you to a special event at the AFI Silver Theatre:

THREE SHORT FILMS…
AND ONE GREAT DISCUSSION

Featuring films by actor/director MATTHEW MODINE
JESUS WAS A COMMIE   |   I THINK I THOUGHT   |   TO KILL AN AMERICAN

Screening of these extraordinary short films will be followed by a discussion and Q&A with:
Matthew Modine,
Bob Edgar (president of Common Cause and former head of the National Council of Churches),
Janet Parshall (nationally syndicated talk show host of “In The Market”) and
Laura W. Murphy (director of the ACLU’s Washington Legislative Office).
The panel will be moderated by Barry Lynn, executive director of Americans United and host of the syndicated “CultureShocks” radio show.

These films have already been recipients of international film festival awards and are being shown selectively this spring around the United States and Europe. Director Modine is a star of many films, including FULL METAL JACKET, AND THE BAND PLAYED ON and TOO BIG TO FAIL and will be appearing in the forthcoming THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, expected to be Summer 2012’s biggest motion picture.

These three short films will be seen by the panelists just as you see them, and they will be asked to comment and debate the ideas in them: from the need for critical thinking to issues of faith, morality and politics.

Best-selling author Sam Harris has said of JESUS WAS A COMMIE:

Jesus Was A Commie elegantly breaks several cultural taboos and blurs the lines of narrative and documentary storytelling. It is both visually beautiful and eminently rational. Not a bad way to start a conversation….”

General admission tickets are only $25, which includes (they are films after all) a soft drink and popcorn and a post-show opportunity to meet Matthew. Reserved front row seats for the event are available for $50 each. (Please ask about special pre-show dinner tickets for Ray’s The Classics steakhouse, right across from the AFI.)

This event is sponsored by Americans United for Separation of Church and State and will be held Wednesday, May 23 from 7:30-9:00 p.m. at the AFI Silver Theatre at 8633 Colesville Road, Silver Spring, Md.
