Design recognition

Hello,

Is it possible to add a new header like "Programmer" or "Planner" to the Infobox on the following page?

Full disclosure: I work as a consultant for Brailsford & Dunlavey, a company based in Washington, DC. Recently I've noticed a lot of firms we work with and compete against are listed throughout Wikipedia for facility projects they have designed, managed, etc. They are listed in Infoboxes on facility pages like the one above.

There are a lot of companies that are not architects, engineers, or contractors. But they are the ones that plan facilities like ballparks, arenas, and stadiums. They hand off architectural programs to designers. They determine whether a project is feasible to begin with.

Does a "programmer" or "planner" tag for facility-based Infoboxes already exist? And if it doesn't, would the Wikipedia community find it useful enough to merit adding?

"This is a tool icon"

Hi. A few times I have seen a message "This is a tool icon" on Wikipedia pages, which sits at the extreme right edge of the window, and doesn't scroll with the rest of the content, like this:

The article depicted here is List of jōyō kanji. The "tool icon" thing does not always reproducibly display on this page; sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. I saw it one one other page, but I can't remember which one. I do not see it on any sites other than Wikipedia. Using WIn 7 and IE9. Where has the biliteracy page gone ?

When I search for biliteracy I am directed to literacy which is NOT THE SAME. Wiki tells me that there is a page on biliteracy but every link goes back to literacy ?

Any ideas

The page was redirected to literacy with this edit in 2009. No edit summary was given, but I'm not exactly sure what to do with the article. It was in unbelievably poor shape when it was redirected and was full of original research and instructions/guides. I'd like to see another editor's thought but I think at a minimum the first paragraph "Biliteracy is the state of being literate in two or more languages. To be biliterate has a stronger and more specified connotation than the claim of being simply bilingual. This is because the term 'literate' indicates the subject is not only able to communicate verbally in a second language, but is also able read and write successfully in this second language." should be restored if links can be found to back up the difference between biliteracy and bilingual. Simply because a page has problems does not mean it should have the entire category eliminated? Dysfunctional navbox - Template:Foam scales and properties

I have looked for style guidance as to whether this is a problem, but have had no success, probably looking in the wrong part of the maze. Is it neccessary or desirable to change the non-standard navbox so that it takes up less space of the bottom of the article, or is it OK to leave it as it is? (it tens to look a bit over the other navboxes, but for all I know it may be perfectly acceptable. I have found that there is at least one other navbox to the same pattern. I don't know what the creator was trying to achieve with this format, so I am hesitant to rush in and change it in unless it is deprecatedPeter (Southwood) ^(talk): 20:27, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

India Indians versus Native American Indians

I don't know why so many authors have a hard time distinguishing between India Indians and Native American Indians. I am a highly educated NATIVE AMERICAN INDIAN (CHEROKEE). I am NOT an India Indian. I know this is so confusing for many people, especially for those who are geographically challenged. Please respect both groups of peoples. When you talk about (generic) Indians, NO ONE knows just who you are talking about and you only confuse readers. Remember...India Indians and Native American Indians. Maybe Jelitch is referring to today's featured article, which refers to the early inhabitants of what is now Florida as "Paleo-Indians". Regarding those two articles, I sympathise with his views. Maproom (talk) 10:24, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

Paleo-Indian is a common term in the academic literature. Many Americans refer to themeselves as Indians and many tribes use the word, as does the OP. We can't do much about this except take an NPOV stance and use the terms commonly used without choosing between them, although perhaps I've misunderstood you. I don't necessarily agree that "we can't do much about this". I don't think the article title is carved in stone. The very first line uses the alternative term "Paleoamerican". Article "1961 Indian annexation of Goa"

I had made two main contributions to this article (with several slight changes now and then), in particular to Chapter 6 ("Internment and repatriation of POWs"). Such contributions were duly supported by references. However, I have noticed that they were deleted from the article and the following notice was sent to me:

This is your last warning. The next time you violate Wikipedia's no original research policy by inserting unpublished information or your personal analysis into an article, as you did at 1961 Indian annexation of Goa, you may be blocked from editing without further notice. I do not understand why I am being warned this way. As I said, both my contributions were duly documented. They were as follows:

Contribution 1: The Portuguese actor José Manuel Mendes was one of the Portuguese soldiers held captive by the Indian army following the annexation of Goa. Almost fifty years later, he spoke in an interview of the incredibly harsh conditions of detention. In poverty-ridden India, no priority would be given to feeding war prisoners, so food in the camp was extremely scarce and poor, virtually limited to one bowl of rice per day. Then, all of a sudden, the numerous errant dogs and cats in the area practically disappeared and, by coincidence or not, the detainees' meals began to include meat.

Contribution 2: After the already existing text: In one incident, recounted by Lt. Francisco Cabral Couto (now retired general), an attempt was made on 17 January, by some of the prisoners to escape the camp. The attempt was foiled, and the Portuguese officers in charge of the escapees were threatened with court martial and execution by the Indians. This situation was defused by the timely intervention of a Jesuit military chaplain., I added the following text:

However, the Indians did not waste the opportunity to exert a cowardly reprisal. According to the Portuguese journalist Luís Pedro Cabral, an Indian lieutenant attacked the Portuguese Captain Carlos Azeredo with a stick, yelling "Run! Run!", to which the latter replied "Vá bardamerda!" (Go to hell). Three Indian officers began to beat him so brutally with the butts of their rifles that Azeredo would certainly die, lest another Portuguese military had not advised him in Portuguese (which the Indians did not understand) not to resist.

Although in fact I cannot produce evidence of Mr José Manuel Mendes' interview to Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (for Contribution #1), I can at any moment send a scan of journalist Luís Pedro Cabral's article in "Visão História" magazine to support my text in Contribution #2.

I do not see why the statements of an Indian officer in his alleged memoirs should be more credible than the statements of Portuguese officers in a magazine. Namaacha (talk) 10:02, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

I do not know anything abou5t the topic, or about this dispute. But I notice the word "cowardly" in the material you say you added. Evaluative and emotive words like cowardly are NEVER acceptable in Wikipedia unless they are directly attributable to (and probably quoting) independent reliable sources. Second opinions requested

I started this page mostly out of personal curiosity, and because it's the sort of thing that I would like to read about. However, now that I've got a few entries, I'm concerned that the list may be trivial, in the sense that the entries are only linked by being terms that have fallen into disfavour or obscurity. It's also unlikely to ever be complete. I wouldn't move it to the mainspace until it was significantly longer, but I'd like a second opinion before investing that time/energy. Interesting concept. I think it could qualify under Wikipedia:Lists#List articles's Glossary criteria. I'd feel relatively safe moving it into article space. Need help adding header text to edit instructions

At WP:RSN, we want to take the header instructions listed here: Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard/Header and repeat them on edit the page when an editor creates a new section. By header instructions, I'm referring to the text beginning with "When posting, please be sure to include any of the following information that..." and ending with "This is not the place for content disputes which should be directed to the article talk page or associated WikiProject" IOW, the content inside (and including) the yellow/orange sections. No, I can't. And looks and acts weird. The bottom order section is missing when I look at it. There is an Edit tab. When I click on Edit, it goes into edit mode but the textbox is readonly. Help with uploading a movie poster under fair use

I've been doing some work with the article "We Shall Overcome (film)". I would like to have the movie poster http://elholms.dk/formmail/filmaftalen/img/4458_poster_droemmen.jpg uploaded under fair use and displayed in the infobox in the article. The copyright holder of the image are "Zentropa Entertainments11" and "Nordisk Film Biografdistribution". Of course it is impossible to find a free movie poster to the article because all movie posters for this film is copyrighted. I am not yet able to upload the picture because I am not a comfirmed user. I hope that somebody please will help me. (The movie poster that is uploaded could be called "Drommen - We Shall Overcome" because the original title of the film is "Drommen" and the English title of the film is "We Shall Overcome"). --Moviedk (talk) 13:48, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

The word 'free'

Hi, I have a question to do with the name Wikipedia The Free Encyclopedia. Does the word 'free' refer to the freedom of speech or the fact that it can be used free of charge?

It has to do with the fact that all of the content in the encyclopedia is released into the public domain under a WP:CC-BY-SA license. If you want to use content from Wikipedia, even for commercial purposes, you are free to do so (as long as you provide attribution). Ryan Vesey Review me! 14:29, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

While your intent was correct, your statement is very wrong. If something is released into the public domain, that means that anyone can use it for any purpose without any restrictions. Something released under the CC-BY-SA license, on the other hand, does have restrictions: most importantly, you must attribute the original source (that's the "BY") and you must allow others to reuse your version under the same terms (that's the "SA"). BTW, the "CC" refers to the set of 6 different but related licenses and the organization that created them. Anomie⚔ 20:25, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

Search bar when using a mobile phone

hi,

i'm trying to use m.wikipedia.org on my mobile phone - when the main page opens i get today's featured article, but there is no search bar. even if i use www.wikipedia.org on my phone - there is no search bar. I am using a Samsung-SGH-820 mobile phone. i've tried to scroll and search for the search bar, but it is not there.

"Template:" in External Links?

You used wrong link syntax in [2]. An editor has fixed it. See Help:Link#External links. I can see how you were mislead by the existing use of {{Official website}}. That is a template and not a link format (although the template produces a link). PrimeHunter (talk) 17:37, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

Unable to remove "Advertisement" label

Topic bans

Is there a way to see whether a user has been topic banned by looking at their userpage or something related to it? I see these various lists of bans, including indefinite bans and other kinds of "restrictions" (including topic bans), but (a) you'd have to review the list to see if the user is listed AND (b) there doesn't seem to be any automatic updating of those lists - they appear to be quite incomplete.--Bbb23 (talk) 18:44, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

I don't think there's any way to do that, aside from combing through their talk page history. Topic bans aren't implemented in any technical way. Equazcion ^(talk) 20:03, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

I believe your talk page history needs to be preserved as a record, so it couldn't be deleted. I'm assuming you know you can blank it yourself though. Equazcion ^(talk) 20:20, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

Because your talkpage is a major venue where you edits get scrutinized, it does is not deleted at request (except specific revisions which might have obscene remarks by some vandal). To prove an articles notability, you usually need to provide a refrence to a reliable site. I provide at least one, sometimes even two. Still they are deleted under A7. Can an admin please have look at my deleted articles, you will notice they have references. You should read Wikipedia:Notability in full, it states at the top of the page that subjects can be considered notable when they "have gained sufficiently significant attention by the world at large" (emphasis mine). One or two reliable sources generally does not constitute significant coverage. I cannot view the deleted articles in question so cannot comment on the sources specifically. Regards. Sources written in other languages

Is it acceptable to cite a source if it is written wholly in a language other than English? Another editor has made additions to an article citing sources written in Spanish. Technically you can tag the source with Template:Source need translation, but speaking as basically the only person who has anything to do with that cat, I can tell that you one of two things will happen. Sortable Table: Dates

Hm, despite my valiant efforts and careful perusal of Help:Sorting, I cannot seem to get this working. I'm trying to get the "Milestones" table on my userpage (see sig) to sort by date, but it never ends up in the proper order. I've worked with Sortable Tables before (I made the one at List of Mario video games), but for some reason I just cannot figure out how the damned dates are supposed to be formatted in order to have them sort correctly! :/ Salvidrim! 02:37, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

It's only one article. One name is a redirect to the other one. That's common when a article is renamed, but there are links to the old name. The redirect keeps links from breaking. There isn't an article for the 1997 film, as far as I can tell. RudolfRed (talk) 04:21, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

Quanah Parker

This question regards the entry on Quanah Parker, Comanche chief.

About his birth, the entry reads, "Nadua and Nocona's first child was Quanah (Fragrance), born in the Wichita Mountains. The exact birthplace is debated, but Quanah visited what he understood to be his birthplace at Laguna Sabinas (Cedar Lake) in Gaines County, Texas in his later years.

That second sentence adds a note of doubt. The claim that Gaines County, Texas is Parker's birthplace has been often repeated and stems from a sketchy account in a 1963 book by Clyde and Grace Jackson. However, many scholars, authors and historians now believe that Quanah Parker was born in Oklahoma, near the Wichita Mountains. This fact is well-documented in books footnoted as Nos. 3 and 19 in the Wikipedia article, and in the book by Jo Ann Powell Exley, listed under "Recommended Reading."

As a result, I believe the entry should read something like, "An early account claims that Parker's birthplace was in Texas, but many scholars, authors and historians now believe that Quanah Parker was born in Oklahoma, near the Wichita Mountains."

Heading added and duplicate question removed

All information in Wikipedia is supposed to be verifiable. Therefore phrases like "many scholars ... believe" should never be used in Wikipedia without a reference to a reliable source that says that "many scholars ... believe" whatever it is. (Even a reference that makes the specific claim is not enough to verify the "many").

Much better would be to say something like "however writers such as Gwynne and Exley argue that ... " with proper references after the names "Gwynne" and "Exley". You can add a reference to the Exley book; and you share the existing reference to to the Gwynne book by naming it. See WP:Referencing for beginners.

I can't make the bottom part of the Carlos Fuentes infobox (the URL etc.) display properly, which is unfortunate as he's on the main page. Normally I'd assume this is me being a bonehead, but other editors appear to have also tried and failed. I tried posting at Template:Infobox Writer but got no response. Category:C programming language family (how is a real Wikipedia link formed for this link?) violates WP:ORDINAL ("single-digit whole numbers from zero to nine are spelled out in words"):

Place a colon before Category to link to it: [[:Category:C programming language family]]. ORDINAL refers to how digits are displayed in article text. Also, Categories are maintained by the Mediawiki software, which lies outside Wikipedia and is used for thousands of other wikis. There is no reason why it should conform in its presentation to the MOS of one particular wiki. That user asked for help further up this page and was given some links about notability etc. I can understand getting frustrated at having to read through that stuff. Unfortunately, creating an article (one that won't get deleted immediately) isn't quite as simple as people tend to think before they actually try doing it. Account/identification problem

A Wikimedian I know in real life and whose identity is quite certain for me has a trouble with his account on English Wikipedia (User:Avalikarvamus). Everything is fine with his account in Estonian Wikipedia, he just has forgotten his password on en.wp. The problem is, his confirmation e-mail in English Wikipedia was on a domain that has been deleted some time ago (due to a recent reform of .ee domains in Estonia). Unfortunately, he has not united all his accounts into a global one, and he cannot do it now. Wikipedia login page does not provide any other ways to prove one's identity besides e-mail, Help:Email confirmation does not deal with such problems and it seems nobody has read its talk page since 2011 anyway. I'm a Wikipedian since 2004 and an admin on et.wp, yet I haven't run into such a problem myself, so the only advice I could give him was to write on some bureaucrat's user page and ask what could be done. If he brings one of them above 46 then he can create a unified account (the right goes to the wiki with the most edits) and use it to request usurpation of the English account at Wikipedia:Changing username/Usurpations. GA Review

I have nominated several article for GA status, lots of them are taking a while to get a GA review, I prefer it to be quicker, because it is an episode for a cancelled show, with the last episode next week, after the show is done, people may lose interest on it. IP address

I received a note saying I committed vandalism on a toads section or something. I had never even seen that page before. It must have merely been someone using the same IP address. Where was the note? There's nothing on your talk page. If you were not logged in, then yes, it might have applied to someone else that had that IP address at a different time. You can avoid that problem by always logging into your account to edit. RudolfRed (talk) 00:15, 21 May 2012 (UTC)

You can only be sure to prevent it by being logged in or having a static IP address with no other users. I see your account was created two minutes before posting here. If you check the "Remember me (up to 180 days)" field at login then you should automatically be logged in when you revisit Wikipedia from that computer and browser. recognizable logo used in Wikipedia:WikiProject Furry and Portal:Furry

hello. File:Furry blue paw logo.png is derived from the WikiFur logo, yet is used as the furry WikiProject template logo, and the logo for the furry portal portalbox. this logo is widely seen on wikipedia, and its use as a logo for this wikiproject and portal seems to me like advertising for WikiFur. we have other free images, like this one, for instance, that are not connected to any website. why use an image "derived from the paw in WikiFur's logo"? it seems to me that since these logos are widely seen, they should not promote any site. i looked for an answer at WP:SPAM, but was unable to find one there. thanks for looking into this.

mw:Help:Extension:ParserFunctions##titleparts is for subpages so it is based on slashes as separators. For spaces you can use string templates but it's not elegant. For example {{First word|{{Remove first word|{{PAGENAME}}}}}}, or {{First word|{{Remove first word/any|{{PAGENAME}}}}}} to work for a larger set of characters in the page name. Before I "go live"

Dear Wikipedia, I have reedited my article and want to go live again, but have a few questions; 1) When I last went live, my name appeared online before the subject name, which of course was very embarrassing. Why did this happen, and how can I avoid it happening again? 2) When I press “Show preview”, the box on the top right that shows my subjects name, birth place and website, is missing other bits of information that I intended it to contain (ie “medium”, “active” and “instruments”. Why is this? 3) Also when I press “Show preview”, the “Categories” do not appear at the bottom. Will they appear when I go live with the article, or have I made an error? It helps a lot when you supply us a link to the draft that you're talking about so that we can look at it and give accurate answers. I believe that you're referring to User:Maya Frida Barr/sandbox and I'll base my answers on that assumption. 1) When you last put an article up, you must have put it on your user page and not in the main article space of Wikipedia. 2) Not all infoboxes have the fields that you want. The template for Infobox Person has different fields from, for example, Infobox Corporation. You can't just add fields and expect them to show up. Those fields have to be present in the infobox template that you're using. For example, the infobox that you're trying to use Template:Infobox actor (which is actually just a redirect to Template:Infobox person) doesn't have a "medium" field. Therefore, it doesn't show up. 3) The categories are commented out. I did that about 10 days ago since your sandbox draft was showing up in the "live" categories. This shouldn't be done. If you move the article to the main Wikipedia article space, you can remove the comments that are now preventing the categories from showing up. Dismas|^(talk) 10:33, 21 May 2012 (UTC)

I fixed your two redlinks; note that capitalization and punctuation may be important in hyperlinks if redirects for likely errors haven't been created. Proxy error

I am getting these messages frequently:

The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.
The proxy server could not handle the request POST /wikipedia/en/w/index.php.

Reason: Error reading from remote server

The tag on the article is a conflict of interest notice. The policy states that the subject of the article or people close to the subject have to be careful when editing the article, in case they change the point of view, which is where the neutral point of view policy comes in. COI in editing Wikipedia:

I am working on editing a bio, however, one of the main editors cites that I have conflict of interest, and does not allow the changes. All I am trying to do is either add new applicable facts to the bio or change information that is incorrect. Technically, according to your guidelines anyone "affiliated" in anyway with the subject of a BOLP would have a COI. However, why should the subject of a BOLP have to allow incorrect information or lack of information in his/her bio. The issue is not the correcting of incorrect information. The issue is how we know whether or not the information is correct. What is needed is independent verification (see Wikipedia:Verifiability) from a reliable source (see Wikipedia:Reliable sources). Also, the major problem with conflicts of interest is that your relationship to the subject affects how you will tend to write about the subject. You are more likely to use "purple prose" and other flowery language, tend over-emphasize information which casts a positive light on a subject, and tend to discount or ignore information which casts a negative light on a subject. That doesn't mean that your expertise or insight is entirely unwanted, it is just that care must be taken that your expertise and insight can be put to proper use in writing an encyclopedia article from a neutral point of view (see Wikipedia:Neutral point of view. For this reason, the best way to handle a conflict of interest is to use an article's "Talk page" to introduce information, properly backed-up with well-respected, reliable, published sources, for any changes you think need to be made. If you want to see the article correct (and we all want to see the article correct), then what you must do is start a thread at the talk page for the article in question, say what needs to be changed, and cite sources which verify what you think needs changing. You're permitted to alter anything you want as long as it's an improvement, including editing or deleting references. Make sure to use descriptive edit summaries so people understand your intentions, and make sure you're keeping the article neutral (WP:NPOV) and reliably-sourced (WP:V). The answer is "yes", because Wikipedia is the encyclopedia that anyone can edit. However, I would recommend a couple of things. Particularly when removing references, I would carefully explain you're rationalle in the talk page. Otherwise your edits are likely to be reverted. Second, unless you have a stable IP adress, I'd recommend you create a use account. It's free, easy, and anonymous. It also allows you to more easily build a level of trust within the community. Is there the potential of an issue occuring if I am adding the same external link to multiple pages? The link is to a university map collection concerning state geography/history of Oklahoma. I have identified certain pages that researchers would benefit from using this external link. I am not adding it to random pages. Please let me know what I need to do so that any problems are limited. Can I avoid the issue of these links being considered spam? Well, only adding links to one site falls under Wikipedia:Single-purpose accounts (note that that's not necessarily a bad thing). The 5th one threw up a warning tag, and they were all reverted. The link to an educational institution, for historical maps, should probably have been given more consideration, and discussion, but I don't see whether you answered the questions asked at your post here in November: are you affiliated with the university, specifically with the maps? and what value do you think they add to those articles? Using Flickr photos in userspace

It doesn't matter about the source (i.e. from Flickr) but rather the licence. Any "free" image can be used anywhere on Wikipedia with a few notable exceptions (e.g. Bad Images).
