A snack is a small portion of food eaten between meals. The food might be snack food—items like potato chips or baby carrots—but could also simply be a smaller amount of any food item.

Excessive snacking has been implicated in the increasing prevalence of obesity in many countries.[citation needed]
Healthy snacks include those that have significant vitamins, are low in saturated fat and added sugars and have a low sodium content.[1] Examples of healthy snacks include:
- Foods that have Whole grains [1]
- Fruits and vegetables [1]
- Nuts and seeds [1]
- Low fat dairy products [1]
- Lean meats,[2] eggs, such as hard boiled eggs[2] and lean cheese.

A Tufts University, Department of Psychology empirical study titled, "Effect of an afternoon confectionery snack on cognitive processes critical to learning" found that a consumption of a confectionery snack in the afternoon improved spatial memory in the study's sample group, but in the area of attention performance had a mixed effect.[3]
