STARRING: Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Michael Caine

After eight years in exile with his fatherly butler, Alfred (Caine, a touch of class), billionaire crime-buster Bruce Wayne (Bale) is in lousy shape, and the Wayne Enterprises coffers aren’t looking any better. Nor is the social fabric of Gotham City, about to be ripped apart by masked terrorist and all-round psycho Bane (Hardy). Welcome to the letdown final instalment of director and co-writer Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, its tone throughout as moody as the blackest Gothic carry-on, even with a supercool flying Bat-gizmo and stalk-slender Hathaway as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, a powerhouse in killer heels.
Never exactly Mr Jolly, Bale as Bruce/Batman is his own dark cloud and who wouldn’t be in his dire place: stone broke and coming a poor second to the richly proclamatory Bane in the brute-force and rat-cunning arenas? Nolan isn’t messing around here—he means menacing business and he’s not about to lighten that load. Cue mass disaster, deadly earnest acting and a thunderous soundtrack that pumps numbingly through scene after scene of Bane and his nuclear bomb moving in on Gotham. He’s a diabolical customer, but I missed the wild abandon of the Joker’s manic glee. At least he put some pep into sociopathic.

I have been reading Who magazine for years and Andie Paviour has never managed to write a review that makes me think she knows anything about movies, or has anything valuable to say. About anything. She has to be the only person on the entire planet to think this movie is worthy of only two and a half stars. I often think she just does it to purposefully be different to everyone else. This is not an interesting or quirky trait. It's ridiculous and annoying. A reviewer is supposed to be objective and she has no idea how to do this. This movie is phenomenal. Get a new job.
