Durham College of Applied Arts and Technology is located in the Durham Region with campuses in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada and Whitby and additional locations in Uxbridge, Port Hope, Port Perry and Beaverton. Durham College has more than 7,000 full-time students, thousands of part-time students and more than 1,600 apprentices.

History

Founded in 1967, Durham College has more than 46,000 alumni today.

Durham College officially opened on September 18, 1967 with 16 portable classrooms, 14 staff and 205 students, offering courses in applied arts, business and technology. The college soon added courses in health sciences and adult training and grew to 1,250 students by its 10th anniversary.

The 1980s were met by more growth, with enrolment increasing to 2,700 in 1987 and further expansion of the facilities including the construction of a new state-of-the art Robotics lab, the precursor to the Integrated Manufacturing Centre found on campus today.

The early 1990s welcomed the establishment of the Whitby campus, featuring the nationally recognized Skills Training Centre. Thousands of apprentices have studied there and the college has become a leader in skilled trades training.

Following in the footsteps of strong partnerships with York and Trent universities, both of which have discernible academic standing, that first brought university courses to the Durham College Oshawa campus, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) opened in 2003. Durham College and UOIT have established a post-secondary partnership unlike any other in the province, sharing a campus, some facilities and selected services, while making it easier than ever before for students to pursue both a diploma and a degree.

Student Life

Durham College is home to a number of fraternities and sororities, both local and international. There is no "Greek row" on campus, nor are the fraternities and sororities formally acknowledged by the College. However, the Greek Council of which nearly all fraternities and sororities are members of are recognized as a student organization by the UOIT and Durham College Student Association. The College has had a fast growing Greek Life since starting on campus 7 years ago. There are currently two fraternities and two sororities on the campus. Of the approximately 8000 students, about 170 are currently involved in a Greek Organization. The Greek system at Durham College has a system of self-government. While there is an executive council, most of the day to day operations of the Greek community are governed by the organizations themselves with a representative from each organization who resides on the Greek Council. Many of the fraternity and sorority houses on campus are located within walking distance to campus. Partnerships

Durham College has a shared campus and facilities with the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. The college, in conjunction with UOIT and private enterprise, has developed network infrastructure to support laptop-based learning at both institutions. This includes the integration of wireless services on campus, as well as e-learning content and curriculum development. Trent University also offers a full-time program at the Durham College campus.

The college offers a wide range of market-driven full- and part-time, apprenticeship, continuing education and career development programs in a number of different disciplines including business, information technology, energy, media, art, design, skilled trades, general arts and sciences, justice, emergency services and health care.
