Albert Nobbs

2

It's Tootsie at Downton.

Nearly thirty years after debuting the role on stage, Glenn Close bagged an Oscar nod playing a 19th-century waiter hiding that he’s a she.

Close’s mannered, offbeat turn is striking, albeit upstaged by fellow nominee Janet McTeer as yet another working-class fella with a secret.

Sadly, the stars are adrift in a ponderous, uninspired film that’s curiously resistant to its inherent weirdness.

Bogged down in subplots and smothered by its uneasy transition to screen, director Rodrigo García fails to match his TV hit In Treatment for psychological insights into Albert’s repression.
