Media Satire

This movie type satirizes the increasingly invasive role of the mass media (press, radio or TV) in everyday life. One variety of this genre focuses those who work in the media, in such film as His Girl Friday and Network, who are often portrayed as arrogant, cynical, and grasping for high-ratings, the latest scoup, or personal fame. Another variation of the media satire focuses on those manipulated. In such works as Truman Show and EdTV, protagonists are often forced to question their own identity and even their own sense of reality as a result of media chicanery. A third and still emerging permutation questions the instruments of the media -- videotape, TV, games -- itself in such films as Videodrome and eXistenZ.
