Head of Pension Fund Management

  • Employer: Environment Agency
  • Location: Bristol, UK
  • Salary: £65,000 per annum + benefits

The Environment Agency Pension Fund (EAPF) is a high-profile pension fund; and part of the Local Government Scheme. It currently has assets of around £1.8 billion and more than (22,000 members) 40,000 fund members (22,000 for the Active Fund, and 18,000 for the Closed Fund).

It’s an award-winning fund too. For example in the last six years it has won the Engaged Investor Trustee Awards’ Best Scheme Governance (Public Sector) category three times.

An authority on pensions, you’ll work with the Director of Finance and the Pensions Committee to manage the EAPF, its governance, investments and administration. Your focus will be to ensure that the scheme is run to the benefit of all members (as defined in legislation) and that it is being administered effectively and efficiently. As well as leading the experienced and focussed team which manages the funds, you’ll drive the fund’s strategic direction, champion change and optimise and improve business delivery. We are set to go through a number of structural changes which will affect our pension fund and we will look to you to manage the implications of these changes. In order to implement change effectively, you’ll build strong working relationships across a range of stakeholders both internally and externally, from the Environment Agency board, Directors Team and Pensions Committee, to Government departments, fund managers, advisers and auditors. You will also become a member of the Finance Leadership Team, contributing to the management of the Directorate. The Finance Directorate provides Financial, Procurement and IT services to the Environment Agency and is a vital part of the Agency’s success in delivering environmental outcomes.

In return, we offer a competitive package with a range of benefits.

About you

You’ll be able to call on considerable pension fund management experience, ideally gained within a similarly large and complex organisation. It’s essential that you have proven experience of the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS), from both an administration and investment perspective. Superb relationship building skills are equally important, as is the ability to lead and influence people at a senior level and drive change. You must also be confident managing significant business risk and the reputation of the Environment Agency. As some national travel will be involved (mainly toLondonfor meetings of the Pension committee and its sub-groups) you should have a flexible approach to your work.
