Looking at this gorgeous blu-ray restoration, it’s hard to disagree.
Front-loaded with whirling battle action, its sumptuous costuming and handsome settings provide an elaborate frame for the hopeless longing of Kazuo Hasegawa’s samurai for the married Lady Mesa (Machiko Kyo).
Stiffly intimate rather than epic, it feels like the most exotic film noir imaginable.
