Another study of the stinging mix of pain and pride of parenthood from steady-handed master Yasujiro Ozu.
Racier than his typical middle-class dramas (relatively speaking), Floating Weeds follows a troupe of travelling actors.
Myriad minute observations ensue, with the big action (again, relatively speaking) reserved for the interplay between the troupe’s leader, his former mistress, and the now-grown son for whom he has such high, fragile hopes.
Reflective, powerful and, like all the best Ozu, acceptingly sad.
