Pacific Rim, Guillermo del Toro’s epic sci-fi actioner, has revealed a first trailer, which you can watch below.
So far, the marketing team have played it relatively coy, with only a minimal amount of stills released. Things began to hot up with the release of some viral material (including some terrifying faux news footage of an attack on San Francisco), and the Pan Pacific Defense Corps was launched.
Now, a full trailer’s been released, giving the world a glimpse of the carnage revealed at Comic-Con 2012.
The premise is an easy sell: Jaegers (giant humanoid robots piloted by Earth’s finest) are called into action to fight off the global threat of incoming Kaiju (enormous monsters in the Godzilla vein). Sounds cool, right?

There’s a genuinely terrifying scale to the action, with the set-pieces promising to be more visceral and involving than most films that contain giant robots.
And the trailer’s jam-packed with cool touches, from a peek inside the workings of a Jaeger, to Idris Elba's sure to be immortal battle-cry, "Today we're cancelling the apocalypse!"
An official synopsis has also been released:
"When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju.
"On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes – a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) – who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse."
Pacific Rim opens in the UK on 12 July 2013.

Peter Jackson will find this completely unwatchable, what with it being shot at 24 fps. The rest of us will have a good time though.

I was SO hyped for this film (I love everything Guillermo Del Toro has done so far) but my excitement level has gone down dramatically ever since the rather poor (IMO) robot designs were released. This trailer dissapointed me even more. Obviously I can't judge a whole film on one trailer but me buying a ticket to see this film is no longer guaranteed. I really hope they're holding back the good stuff. I know first trailers are usually quite crappy and that the better stuff is saved for the trailers closer to the release date but the visuals in here are nothing compared to Del Toro's other stuff, maybe it's purposeful but I wasn't impressed once. Obviously this is all just my opinion so don't attack me but feel free to disagree.

There's a fine line with trailers when it comes to showing too little or too much. Sadly this showed far too little and if it wasn't for the GDT name on screen I could assume it was a Godzilla and Power Rangers mash up. I can only assume that all the fights take place in the dark or fog, which worries me in terms of detail shown on screen. It really wouldn't have hurt to show a proper shot of a monster full length to show the size and scale. It hasn't left me wanting to see more, which is sad :(

i think it looks great and there looks like plenty of attention to detail. man, 5 years ago you'd all be gagging for this, has Michael Bay really sullied or desire to see giant robots for ever? having ssaid that, i never enjoyed any of the hellboy films and i never thought pan's labyrinth was that great either. i love del toro's subject matter but the narrative never sucks me in.

Looks pretty incredible - hope it lives up to the hype as to me Del Toro has only made one great film in Pans Labyrinth and though he is enthusiastic about the genres I love, he rarely seems to deliver (perfect example was Don't Be Afraid of the Dark - he was raving about that at comic-con but it was c**p). It's strange but I really like what he says, think he comes across as an interesting and intelligent film maker with some great visions and yet when I watch his films I am usually underwhelmed. Hopefully, this will change and reflect his passion in terms of quality. Next year looks great with Django Unchained, Elysium, Man of Steel, Sin City 2, Only God Forgives, the second part of The Hobbit and also this one.
