Harvey Keitel joined French auteur Bertrand Tavernier in Scotland for this 1980 cult curio, a Truman Show-like sci-fi in which Romy Schneider plays a woman with an incurable disease in a society where illness has all but been eradicated.
Keitel is sent to secretly film her last days – using a camera implanted behind his eyes – for a reality TV show (run by Harry Dean Stanton’s sleaze-bag).
Tavernier captures a desolate Glasgow gloriously, giving it a moody, melancholy sheen to match Keitel’s Method mumblings.
But for all its Big Brother prescience, it’s not dated well. Stilted and sterile, it’s cut-price Cronenberg.
