    TOTAL FILM!! You call yourseves professionals. This list if fine except for you views on A.I. The beings at the end are not aliens they are MECHAS. The point of the whole ending is that mankind have become extinct and outlived by there own creations, the MECHAS became self sustaining. the Ironic twist is the MECHAS were trying to recreate human life and found that it couldnt really be done.

    There were some movies on this list which endings I actually liked a lot. Like "Identity"...at that time it was a pretty great twist, loved the movie (including the great ending). Then "Kill Bill Vol. 2"...it's just crazy-funny. Nothing wrong with that. Not everything has to end with a slow-mo explosion! And the "Monty Python and the Holy Grail"....it's Monty Python! It's that kind of crazyness you should expect from them. It's nuts...but brillant! Then you complain about the cheesy-ending of "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" but at the same time you don't like the un-happy ending of "Cast Away". So what now...happy or un-happy? Nothing's right anymore....and btw, I though Cast Away ended on a pretty uplifting note...a crossroad in Nolands (Hanks) life. The end of his old life (and wife) and the beginning of something new...probably the Wings-Woman. Also nothing wrong with "Batman" and "David Gale".About "What Dreams May Come"...it doesn't end there...they (the parents) get reborn and start life again together as children. Agreed though on "Scream 2" (the Killers are two people that didn't even get much screentime during the movie, at that time I was like: Who???) and "I Am Legend" (they should have kept the original ending).

    Yeah, couple of things... Third act arrival of aliens in Knowing? They're clearly meant to be angels, Knowing is one of the most pro-religious films ever made - the ending is literally Armageddon and the children go to heaven, albeit on spaceships which is a bizarre move, but after casting Nicolas Cage I'm sure such things as common sense were quite low down on the list.. Also, pretty sure Denzel Washington was playing Frank Lucas in American Gangster. Only 18 pages in but I'll let you know if there's anything else. I know it's early but iMDB is still at your disposal.

    Guys! You might have decided you don't like Prometheus. That's okay. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion. But you might at least get the basic cast right. Naomi Watts wasn't in Prometheus! I think you're refering to Noomi Rapace...short in stature, high in cheek bone and dark of hair.

    NO.41 please stop saying that superman spins the world back on its axis result in turning back time. this is just the visual representation as superman himself, emotional charged by the death of lois, goes faster than the speed of light therefore in this reality travels himself back in time.     As much as I love Total Film, and very much enjoy these features I have to say I was very surprised to see some of the comments made on this. Being Film experts, you don't seem to have the grasp of some of the messages that these films are giving. Suce as Cast Away. Bandit1 Made a great point that the whole point of the ending was that his old life of being regimented and living life by his job has changed so dramatically. He is at a cross roads where for the first time in his life he has no idea where he is going or what he is doing. Its a very happy ending and very well done by Zemeckis. Saving Private Ryan. You can't possibly think thats a bad ending. Its a powerful message which is done brilliantly. Signs (which is one of my favourite films) This message is that everything happens for a reason. The fact that they only have one weapon is irrelevant. Its all about the things we do and the choices we make. You need to think deeper when watching a film like that. Bandit1 also made a good comment about Monty Python. There is no possible way you could have a go at them when the whole idea of their films is to take the mick out of themselves. Very shocked that is on this list. Now don't get me wrong I do agree with the majority of the films you have chosen, but I just feel you need to think more carefully when doing this as there are some clear mistakes you are making based on all the comments you are receiving. Working at Total Film would be an honour for any film fan including myself, so for you guys to make these basic mistakes is surprising. I hope George Wales does his research next time. And Naomi Watts in Prometheus....that is shocking!!!!

    I'm gonna be controversial here, but Unbreakables ending i didnt especially like for 2 reasons. Firstly the "we ran out of money" words on screen fate of the main villain..what a payoff. Also that it was meant to be some kind of twist, when for the entire film SPOILERS Jackson stalked willis AND HIS WIFE repeatedly, messages on answering machines, berated a parent for buying a painting for the wrong reason, vandalised a comic book store for no obvious reason and generally being sinister as anyone can be. Even in the 10 whole minutes he's kinda good he even harasses what might well be an innocent man who bruce willis suspects might have a gun. It shouldnt be a shock that this guy is a villain...great film but not a good ending.

    bfaethecp is right the world turning the world backwards is just the visual representation (that Superman sees) of time turn back, if you were high above earth and time turned back it would appear that the world was spinning the wrong way... What confuses people (and rightly so) is that Superman then files the oppisite way to return the earth to it's normal spin...

    Forgetting Sarah Marshall is essentially the same film as Swingers.. a film for broken hearted men to watch after a long relationship ends badly. It takes you from the gutter to a place of hope that there's 'plenty more fish in the sea'... so Jason Segel does need to end up with someone new... I just wasn't a fan of how it was executed. they should have reconciled in Hawaii instead of the cliche misunderstanding/long trip tacked on conclusion.

    I was disappointed with Fallout: The Movie where Denzel Washington goes to Alcatraz and dies. Gary Oldman cries and the people go 'Tottenham' on his town. I was like... "thats it?"

    So George Wales have you even seen Monty Python and the Holy Grail? The ending is clearly the payoff of an earlier gag. If you'd seen the film you would know that the police that arrest them at the end are the police investigating the death of the "famous historian".

    Ong Bak 2, the screen fades to black and we're told to hope, wish and dream enough for Tony Jaa to win. I know they followed it up with part 3 because they ran out of money, but why not just say to be continued? Also, Signs, no alien force has ever invaded a planet with a toxic atmosphere? Isn't that what we do in Avatar?

    I love the Monty Python Holy Grail ending. And well done for bungling the Prometheus/Naomi Watts bit. Brilliant. One of the biggest film releases of the year and a professional film reviews site forgets the lead actress and just assumes it's Watts, probably as she looks a bit like Charlize Theron and, you know, she was in the film. Innit. At least TF has finally admitted that Prometheus is lacking in something. It's still a rubbish film.

    Umm... that's not the ending of the book I Am Legend. You're touching slightly on one of the themes but that never actually happens. The ending is so much more awesome and detailed and complex, giving full meaning to the book's title. I don't want to give it away because that is a book you shouldn't know the ending of beforehand. Seriously, if you haven't already done so, read the book!

    This is insane. This is supposed to be a film site and yet your writers continue to make silly mistakes over and over again. Mixing up plot points, character names and casts all together. I would love to work for this site being a movie lover, I feel as if George Wells is taking it for granted. This is not the first time a mistake was made on a feature it has happened more than once. USE IMDB IF YOU ARE NOT SURE!!!!

    You've obviously not read I Am Legend. There's no test subject in his home in the book. They use a mole to locate him and then intend to publicly execute him because he is a threat to their new society. He foils this by committing suicide in a hospital room with a baying crowd outside.

    The constant moaning of the "multiple" LOTR endings really irks my tats! I felt it bookended nicely and came full circle when the Hobbits arrived back in the Shire. PJ and Co. HAD to give the characters all the send-offs they deserved. If they didn't, people would be moaning about that - probably. Its a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" kinda situation....

    okay, where to start. LOTR screwed the pooch when it changed the ending from the book. Who wouldn't want to see the Hobbits raise an army in the shire and take on sarumans gang outside bag end .without it we are stuck with an hour and a half of endings and goodbyes. oh and Lady in the Water is one of the best films of the last ten years.

    I thought the people that worked for Total Film were actually film buffs that know what they are talking about? SO MANY MISTAKES. Also, completely missing the point of the endings for many of these.... Psycho? Holy Grail? I can't actually believe this list :S

    I'll agree that Contact had an awful ending, but what you describe isn't the ending. The point of showing what Ellie sees the "alien" to be (indeed the whole point of the film up to that point) is that we're not really sure if she's meeting an alien or being duped by Hadden. Ellie takes it on faith that she did meet an alien in the form of her father, in spite of the fact that she's rejected faith her entire life. The filmgoer can decide what she really saw/imagined. The awful ending is actually that video chat with James Woods and Angela Bassett when Bassett says something like , "Why is there 18 hours of static?" Now that filmmakers have just decided for me whether or not Ellie met an alien. I can only imagine that this scene was not in the original cut, and was added after some test screenings in which audiences asked, "Well, did she meet an alien?"

    The Life Of David Gale does not paint anti death penalty campaigners as whack-jobs. The whole point was that this trial was pulling in the whole state involving everyone to raise awareness of the circumstances and wrong-doing of the death penalty. How can you be a whack-job if something so personal and meticulously planned works out perfectly? It was their last resort to jolt the public and the government into changing perspectives. Self sacrifice for the cause that is so personal to David Gale (Kevin Spacey) doesn't make him a "whack-job" in my mind, it makes him the ultimate hero for his cause.

    Pyscho...really? the film ends on the creepiest shot ever of Norman with the superimposed skull of the mother and her voice in his head, frankly creepy, that's not a bad ending. Neither is A.I., it's a heartbreaking ending frankly and the aliens are for once a great thing, unlike Indi 4. Then Forgetting Sarah marshall saw the Dracula play, so that's all good.

    I've never understood why so many disliked the ending(s) of the Lord of the Rings. It was close to the book, even leaving out Gimli and Legolas off on their own journey together. And help Peter Jackson if he did film the scouring of the Shire section from the third book. They probably would have b***hed about that as well. As for the other mistakes made by this "professional" film guide website and magazine, the other commentators have made good reference of that.

    George Wales....You have an amazing job. No idea how you got it though I have to say as your film knowledge is quite shocking. Make sure to do your research seeing as you don't know that much about films. At least that way those of us who like films and know a lot more than you can enjoy your features in the future.

    I'm not sure if someone has already commented this, but in regards to the ending of Superman, if you watch it in the mindset that only Superman himself travels back in time to before Lois dies, it actually makes a lot more sense. So he doesn't actually affect the earths rotation, but the planet just appears to be spinning backwards because Superman (and, I suppose, the audience) are travelling back in time.

    Entertaining list... however I don't see how the reasoning for Saving Private Ryan's ending would be considered bad. Still a damn fine movie AND ending.

    The end of Saving Private Ryan simply does not make sense. When you consider the entire film is told in flashback and Ryan himself doesn't turn up until the final third of the film, how would he know what had gone on beforehand? How would he have such vivid memories of people he hadn't even met, who died on the way? If the old man at the cemetery had turned out to be Edward Burn's character that would have been more logical. And far less annoying.

    ^ Edward Burns or Jeremy Davies could have told him, or any of the others who met Ryan? It wasnt necessarily told in flashback either, it just had bookends. But yes, it was an annoying ending although given the subject matter understandable.

    In Forgetting Sarah Marshall... she was kind of a b***h and she cheated on him. And he gets to see his family after being stressed for awhile in Argo. How is that not a good ending... he accomplishes his goal and winds down after awhile of anxiety and stress. I also don't understand the objection to (500) Days of Summer. And I don't know who complains about Monty Python and the Holy Grail. And also A.I. isn't that bad. And then your reason for Saving Private Ryan is the worst reasoning ever. I Am Legend was fine... you are correct though in the book its different... he is basically the monster of legends for kidnapping one of them and killing them.
