Rumour: Justice League villain revealed?

The DC superheroes might have a big baddie to battle...

The Justice League movie is rumoured to have chosen Darkseid as its villain, according to Latino Review.

The report has suggested that the malevolent, practically immortal ruler of the planet Apokolips will unfurl his campaign of death, destruction and misspelling in the DC Comics ensemble romp that's due to arrive in 2015.

This news should be taken with a rather sizeable pich of salt, as, in the absence of any set details about the project, the Justice League rumour mill has been working overtime of late.

Only last week, Joseph Gordon-Levitt denied claims that he was going to play JL stalwart Batman, while everyone from Ben Affleck to Christopher Nolan has been falsely reported as taking on directing duties since George Miller walked in 2008.

Nevertheless, Darkseid seems like a plausible choice: A nine-foot tall demigod with the ability to control minds and shoot deathly beams from his eyes, he would pose a threat big enough to necessitate the likes of Superman and Wonder Woman joining forces.

Now the question is who could play this towering villain? Could this be Stephen Merchant’s chance to bulk up and broaden his acting portfolio?

Justice League will be released in the UK in 2015.

Big alien threat to the earth that requires the Super-heroes to team up. That's a brilliant idea. I wonder why no ones thought of that before. Oh, wait......

Ok, I don't have a problem with Darkseid but isn't Darkseid a predictable villain for the Justice League film???. E.g. in the New 52 comics, the villain of the JLA is... wait for it... Darkseid! This is just my opinion, but what about introducing the Martian Manhunter and the aliens from Mars? Or is this too Justice League Unlimited? Or, what about introducing Lex Luthor as a JLA villain, and Supes needs help from the Bat, The Amazon, The Green Guy, and Sppedy Gonzales -> the Fastest Man Alive? Any ideas of other villains...?

We all know this film is going to be nowhere near as good as The Avengers was. The Avengers had such a big build up to it (Iron Man 1 + 2, Incredible Hulk, Captain America, Thor). We had already gotten to know the team so when they came to assemble in Avengers we didn't need anymore back story (well except for Hawkeye and Black Widow). Marvel had thought out Avengers very well but Warner Bros are just rushing into JLA.

Affleck and Nolan? HAHAHA Yeah right! Go down a few letters of the alphabet and you'll hit S-list directors like McG, Ratner, P WS Anderson and Wiseman. You all know what the 's' stands for, Oh and for the record Johansson was baad in Avengers, all the emotional range of a farting tortoise.

Maybe we don't need a build up to the JLA film? Most DC fans (or not) [maybe] know the main superheroes of the JLA. But this is what fans want - a JLA Film(?) Maybe... I've been waiting for this film for a long time... But wouldn't Warner Bros/ DC be copying Marvel by making films like Wonder Woman, The Flash, etc, etc? It is kinda lame doing this... I thought the Avengers was OK, but there was too much... I have to agree with Hadouken76 saying that Johansson was bad, extremely bad!

They Go for the villain that's exactly the same as Thanos, the year that the Avengers 2 comes out. That's a clever move...

Isn't Darkseid a bit too similar to Thanos for non-comic book fans? I mean JL and Avengers 2 are both coming out around about the same time and having similar enemies might not be a great idea. It doesn't matter which heroes or villains are in those two films for comic book readers as we'll go see them even if they're as bad as Green Lantern, it's the non fans who need winning over.

I can see them having real difficulty with this film. The Marvel guys have managed to get to point with all the heroes involved where they're bankable enough individually to make money but not so big they cramp each others style in a joint venture (with good direction) and not take themselves seriously. JLA doesn't have those luxuries. The DC guys are too busy being gritty and serious, too big for each others shadows. A good attempt at the Flash could bind them, Green Lantern could still be that glue, but I think that the levity and mockery are what make it work. Even in the (good) JLA cartoons, Bats is the serious one but still knows when to deadpan for comic effect. As for the villain, Lex neutralises Supes with Kryptonite all the time, but he'd need others to cover the less powerful yet (ironically) more dangerous heroes like WW, Flash and Bats. Meaning more backstory which wouldn;y work in a one-off JLA, meaning set-up solo outings etc etc. Getting the levity of Green Lantern in there (which can definitely work) is the easiest piece move, followed by a light Flash then we're set. With JLA the Movie I think they're trying to run before they've hired the fastest man alive...

Makes sense, they'll need a formidabble villain to force someone like Superman to ask for assitance.
