Having quietly stolen the show in Thor with his conniving villainy, Tom Hiddleston’s Loki was a worthy adversary for the Avengers in their big-screen debut earlier this year.
However, despite the character’s undoubted charisma and boo-hiss nature, Hiddleston thinks it unlikely that he’ll be returning to the Avengers sequel in 2015.
“I don't know, and that really is the honest answer," said Hiddleston when asked whether he would be returning. "I suspect not, only because I think that probably the audiences are tired of Loki being the bad guy. Maybe the Avengers need somebody else to fight. But I'd love to be part of it again.”
Going by the post-credits scene in the first movie, it would appear that Thanos is being lined up as the new big bad, although that may yet depend on what happens in the next set of Phase Two movies.
Loki fans can at least rest safe in the knowledge that their hero will be back to his old tricks in Thor: The Dark World, which is set to open in the UK on 8 November 2013.

Good, I know Loki is a big part in the world of Thor ect. but with over 50years off stories lets see someone else steal our hearts - however it is good to see a villain so liked - I'm liking the Thanos idea, and I think (going to the future) if phase three doesn't lead toward Civil War they should do a take on Master of Evil, I mean a super-villain team up would be awesome - Red Skull, Loki, Mandarin and who knows who else they have installed for us.

Thanos has already been confirmed as the main villain for Avengers 2 ... though I think Loki may still play a small part in the second film, he was basically a pawn of Thanos and I think (re-watching it) just as much as the mercy of the Mind-Gem in his staff as the Avengers were when they were bickering on the Heli-Carrier. so he could feature, however, personally, I'd like them to leave Loki out of it after Thor: The Dark World and give Thanos center stage. As for future villains, there's so much to choose from @marvelboy, I totally agree that a Masters Of Evil story would be sweet, they are the ultimate super villain team in my book. Both Kang The Conqueror and Ultron would be strong enough and epic enough to be a villain in a film each. The Korvac Saga could be a perfect story for the big screen and yes, Civil War could easily be 2 or 3 films if done properly and Marvel can get the rights to X-Men and FF and Spider-Man back, or work out a deal with FOX, SONY etc to have those characters appear in the Avengers films ... there's stories right there for at least 6 more films over the next 20 years or so (if they stick to one every three years, but just because Avengers 2 isn't until 2015, doesn't mean the next one has to be 2018 ... it could be 2017) ... sorry I'm rambling, but I'm just genuinely excited by the prospect of where this franchise could go :-)

Would love Civil War to come to the big screen, but I think that would need a whole lot of work, TV, and solo movies then Avengers 3, just seems such a big story to tell and would need so much time to tell the proper story, its something I would prefer to be patient and see it properly done! I guess its possible.... but yes it would have to involve Spiderman.

@indianabones ... maybe Civil War could be the entire story arc of Phase 4? I'd love to see it but just not too soon (remember some of the stuff that happens, I think they really need to establish a history between these characters over several Avengers and solo films, so that when the Super-Hero Registration Act is envoked and Tony and Steve face off against each other, it has the proper emotional whomp) I think Phase 4 would be a great time to do that, audiences would feel the weight of history behind it, just like we did when reading the comics ... Civil War built over many years :-)

This is pretty good news. I mean I think he's a great actor and Loki is a great character but having the same bad guy over and over gets boring after a while if he/she doesn't get a break. I'd love to see him return in Phase 4 or something but It'd be good for Avengers 2, Thor 3 and Avengers 3 to not feature him.

Love Hiddleston's Loki and I could gladly watch him be the villain in all future Marvel movies, but it's time for THANOS !!!

i dont know as much as most of you about the marvel history so my opinion doesnt count for much. but i loved Hiddleston as Loki, brilliant actor for a brilliant character, but like jack sparrow, if a character is over used they can become tedious, i can imagine him having a great death at some point... maybe saving his brother, would be a good end

What he says with this statement is actually not that he won't reprise his role in the Avengers sequel. He just won't be the main villain. Of course it's hard to say where he'll be in 2014 (which is when they will be filming I assume) and which projects he'll work on, but it would be careless of Marvel to not utilise such a popular actor at all. My take is, that Loki will continue to manage mischief, but not as a main villain, more like an unreliable and ambiguous ally/saboteur, with a plot that will see a dramatic redemption arc for his character once the Avengers trilogy comes to an end. See also Joss Whedon's Spike or Angel. He has a hand for bad boys going good without losing their bite. I suspect he'd have the same in mind for Loki. And, finally, I also believe, Loki will die in the end, having redeemed himself, much like Spike (or like Darth Vader in Star Wars or Snape in Harry Potter)
