Two children come together to deal with the aftermath of Nazi killings

June 1940: A little girl whose parents have been killed in the frantic exodus from Paris finds refuge at a farm, where she and the farmer’s boy cope with the traumas of the war by inventing innocent death rituals of their own.

Skilfully avoiding sentimentality, director René Clément draws performances of exceptional veracity from young Brigitte Fossey and Georges Poujouly, and the film picked up the best Foreign Film Oscar.

It still stands as one of cinema’s most perceptive and touching portrayals of childhood.
