Annie

The musical tale of a little orphan girl called Annie

Thirty years on, John Huston’s twinkly Broadway adaptation is as syrupy and intermittently spiky as ever, with Aileen Quinn winsomely bedimpled as the titular orphan.

Carol Burnett gives her a run for her money though, as boozy caretaker Miss Hannigan – her slapstick ditty ‘Easy Street’ (performed with an underused Tim Curry) still provokes mountainous guffaws.

Huston’s film is as much an ode to musicals as it is to movies – check out the sequin-spangled 10-minute sequence in which the great director trumpets the magic of cinema via showstopper number ‘Let’s Go To The Movies’.

“Leapin’ lizards”, indeed.
