Star Trek Into Darkness

Director JJ Abrams (Star Trek (2009)) is returning for the sci-fi sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness.

The film finds Kirk, Spock and the rest of the Enterprise crew stepping up to a new challenge when they come face-to-face with an as of yet unnamed but nefarious villain, played by Benedict Cumberbatch.

Although plot specifics have been strictly kept under wraps thus far, the Sherlock actor admits he has been bulking up for the role and describes his upcoming role as "iconic and exciting".

So far the Super 8  director has been shrouding everything to do with the film in secrecy, with the exception of a three-frame teaser showing Zachary Quinto as Spock, entering a boiling hot volcano.

Could Abrams’ teaser actually be sly revelation of a critical moment in the film?

Star Trek Into Darkness is slated for release on 17 May 2013, and reunites the Enterprise crew from the 2009 film (including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban and Zoe Saldana).

The moody title suggests a darker installment of the new Star Trek franchise, but will Abrams' follow through with the highly anticipated sequel?
