Sweeney!

3

John Thaw and Dennis Waterman bring their hit TV show to the big screen

2012’s Ray Winstone/Plan B remake wasn’t the first attempt to bring Jack Regan and George Carter to the cinema, John Thaw and Dennis Waterman making their own big-screen foray in this 1977 spin-off.

Basically two episodes stitched together, David Wickes’ film ups the ante a tad by bringing in a few bigger names (Barry Foster, Ian Bannen) and cranking up the gratuitous violence and nudity.

As ever, it’s the interplay between the stars that keeps things cooking as their grumpy alter egos probe a hooker’s death and a government conspiracy.

Available singly or boxed up with 1978’s similarly solid Sweeney 2.
