The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey5

The Hobbit is finally becoming a three-part movie, following a hiatus of almost a decade since The Lord Of The Rings trilogy ended with The Return Of The King.

Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman, the titular Hobbit) is tricked by Gandalf (Ian McKellen) into hosting a party for Thorin Oakenshield and his band of twelve dwarves.

The band sing of reclaiming their rightful home under the Lonely Mountain, and the vast treasure that lies there, stolen many years ago by the dragon Smaug.

After a spot of light coercion, the group set out on their quest, an epic journey that sees them encounter trolls, goblins, giant spiders, and the mighty dragon Smaug... as well as a creature named Gollum, and a certain ring.

Peter Jackson, Academy award-winning director of The Lord Of The Rings, returns to direct the JRR Tolkein classic that started it all. Although it wasn't always set to be so, with Jackson only stepping up after Guillermo del Toro left the project.

After endless delays, the project finally got up and running, and fans everywhere (including us), were blown away by the first trailer, which we subjected to a full breakdown.

The film appeared at Comic-Con 2012, as marked by a rather wonderful poster. For everything you need to know about The Hobbit, stick with us on this page.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opens on 14 December 2012. Part II (also known as The Hobbit: There And Back Again) opens on 13 December 2013. That's two years of Christmas viewing sorted.

I am on the fence with this one. The Hobbit is my favourite book so I would love to see a movie of it but only if it is done well. What I am not sure on however is the fact they are making two Hobbit movies. The book is half the size of The Fellowship of The Ring so I do not see how they can make two films out of it.

I sometimes need to pinch myself when I think about how I live 5 minutes away from the studios where a lot of this movie is going to be filmed. Seems unreal... I'm so excited for this!
