Having successfully rebooted Judge Dredd in recent splatter-happy adaptation Dredd, screenwriter Alex Garland is apparently keen to get his teeth stuck into a sequel, focusing upon the more fascistic side of Judging.
At this stage, no sequel has been confirmed by the studio, but that hasn’t stopped Garland from formulating a few ideas as to what direction it might take.
“From my point of view, the politics is a lot of what I want to get into," said Garland. "There’s a lot of stuff that’s implied in the first film that you could really explore a lot more of in the second. Dredd is part of a police state. He’s a fascist”
“The subversives are sometimes the enemy in the comic books - there’s something really interesting about pro-democracy terrorists. Where the bad guys are the people fighting for democracy. Of course they’re not the bad guys, because you should be fighting for democracy. I would like to explore that.”
It’s certainly an interesting perspective, although we’d imagine there would still be plenty of bodies in there to appease the gorehounds. As sequel pitches go though, it’s better than the usual, “the same, but darker”…

If it does enough box office maybe the budget can go up a bit and we can see more of the outside world. Although what he's saying here does make it sound a little like demolition man with the pro-democracy whatever.

The 'stuck in a building' plot was actually quite ingenious given the budget limitations though... I think you leave with a sense of the wider world, but mostly it's a character study of what happens when you put someone like that in a confined space, and see what's left when the dust settles. Also bonus points for the incredibly pared down dialogue (it's oddly quiet between the gunshots), gorgeously shot ultraviolence and a couple of actual decent female lead characters. Never thought in a million years I'd be so impressed with this, but kudos to Alex Garland.

So its a good film then? Thats a relief. The second one will no doubt be more expansive, hopefully with the Dark Judges FINALLY making an appearance.

Really surprisingly, it's a very well-made film and done a bit differently than the usual SF action stuff. Freaking loved it. I saw it the first time based on the trailer alone, then ended up watching it twice more in a week. Wasn't bored for a second. It's Dredd reinvented as a human Terminator, with odd little echoes of that and 90s splattergore SF action like Total Recall (much more so than the recent actual remake of that ironically), and the most gorgeous slow-mo violence that's actually there for a reason. Also: that cast. How could you not want to watch Lena Heady take on Dredd?

Sequels gotta be in the cards; been at the top of the UK box office for yonks now hasn't it? I've no idea how it's performed stateside... I hope we do get to see a sequel. Something more expansive yes, but with no loss of the grit, bloodiness, or grim silence.

Really disappointed with the opening weekend figures stateside. Cannot understand the American audiences- especially after all the positivity following the sneak preview at Comic-con. Finally action and adult comic-book fans get a proper adult film, as opposed to the usual watered down 12a s**te, and it will probably do well to brake even. I predict £200mil gross at least for GI Joe 2, the world has gone mad!!!

Thought Dredd was very close to the 2000AD original hope there will be a sequel hopefully along the lines of the apocalypse war not sure that the public are ready for judge death at the moment,but looks like the story line could possibly be along the lines of America,what ever it is good to see Mega city ones top Judge in action

I hope that there will be more money made on sales of blu-rays and DVDs, that will persuade the film makers to do a sequel. If they do, I hope they do the following: 1. Drop the 3D, it's annoying and takes you out of the cinematic experience. 2. Make the film longer, at least 15 minutes longer. I felt it was just a bit too short, when it finished. 3. Don't make the sequel too complicated, I liked the film being simple, brutal and in your face. I don't want to see some lame Star Wars prequel-esque bull$h1t.

Sounds like Alex Garland is talking about putting the "Total War" graphic novel forward as a possible screenplay. If this happens it would be THE best sequel, EVER !!! If you haven't read it it's a must - have after "America". It's got it all, more MC1, more brutality, more suffering (Judges and citizens alike) and city-blocks being nuked !! Awesome on the page, done right this would be even better than the the first !!
