Bill Pullman talks Independence Day 2

Says it could happen without Will Smith

The impending arrival of Independence Day 2 has long been a rumour that won’t go away, despite Fox’s seeming unwillingness to greenlight anything without the confirmation of Will Smith’s involvement.

And while nothing new has emerged from Smith’s camp regarding the sequel, co-star Bill Pullman has suggested that the project may go ahead regardless.

“The Will Smith part of it may be ongoing but I think there’s strategies for both," said Pullman. "I like what I have to do in both of them.

“I’m not in an old age home in a wheelchair being wheeled out for one more moment,” he continues. “It’s a very interesting conception of what happens to Whitmore between then and when it picks back up.”

Whether or not anything will happen in the near future remains to be seen, but it does at least seem as though contingencies have been made in the event of Smith’s non-participation. Watch this space…

Will this EVER get off the ground? Most of the target audience will surely have been born after the original at this rate. Whilst the original is a hokey, if enjoyable action movie, I always found it cheesy as hell especially Will Smith's character. If he doesn't appear in it, I'll shed no tears because they may actually get a lead who can play a character that isn't based on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

I agree, I don't think you need Will Smith, the concept is bigger than the cast. They could have a whole new cast of characters facing the threat this time and if Smith isn't up for it, then having Pullman will still be great and maybe Goldblum would return? As long as the film is fun and silly and OTT and enjoyable (just like the first) that's all I'd care about, no Smith is no big deal in my opinion.
