FT Bridging Eastern Africa Summit 2013
 

 

 

Thank you very much for your interest in the FT Bridging Eastern Africa Summit to be held in Singapore. We have decided in cooperation with the Kenyan government to postpone the event to 2013. The new date is still being finalised, but will be after the Kenyan general elections to be held in March 2013.

Overview:

Kenya, the gateway to East Africa, is poised to lead an ambitious – and socially impactful -- $25 billion infrastructure development plan that will effectively connect East African countries, as well as create a better bridge between East and West Africa. The LAPSSET Infrastructure project is underpinned by the importance of this new transport corridor, which will establish a new port hub in Lamu in Kenya to better serve trade flows with South Sudan and Ethiopia, and will also enhance the investment climate of Eastern Africa at a time of increasing interest among global investors in the African continent as a whole.

However, the grand scale of LAPSSET will require substantial investment beyond that which can be provided by aid and multilateral agencies. What incentives are required to attract new capital providers, particularly from Asia? What are the risk-return profiles of these projects? Which power initiatives will appeal to private developers? Will transport projects remain in the hands of local governments, or carried out in partnership with foreign builder-operators?

The Financial Times, in collaboration with the Kenyan Prime Minister’s Office and Ministry of Transport will gather leading policy-makers, investors, contractors and strategists to discuss these issues and offer a deeper understanding of the opportunities envisioned by LAPSSET.

Bridging Eastern Africa will unravel the economic potential and geopolitics of Kenya and its East African neighbours while showcasing the infrastructure projects that have been designed to propel the entire region towards greater socio-economic progress.

This one-day event, to be chaired by David Pilling, Asia Editor, Financial Times, will feature:

  • A dialogue on the economic outlook for Eastern Africa
