Daniel Day-Lewis on his approach to Lincoln

Exclusive: The Oscar-winning actor on his latest role

In the current issue of Total Film magazine (out now, and available for just £1.99 on your iPad), we sit down with movie titans Steven Spielberg and Daniel Day-Lewis to talk about their awards-baiting historical drama.

You can read the full interview inside the issue, but here’s an excerpt of what Day-Lewis had to say when we asked him about his approach to playing the 16th president of the United States:

“I think there’s a great vulnerability which co-exists with his strength. Quite apart from his own tough upbringing, he had a deep sense of compassion and empathy for people and creatures that remained with him throughout his life.

“It was his essence that those two conflicting things existed side by side, and they probably gnawed at him in such a way that he couldn’t have survived, regardless of the assassination.”
