Alexander Dovzhenko War Trilogy

Three of Alexander Dovzhenko's finest in one handy package.

Zvenigora is an inventive trip through Ukrainian history, while Arsenal is a tale of the revolution that finds absurdities in war that Kubrick and others would echo.

Best of all is Earth, an ambiguous look at collectivisation.

The Soviet regime found the films counter-revolutionary, but moments of transcendence and beauty challenge any better-known silent master.

Zilch extras – a pity, with such a fascinating talent.
