The brutish machismo of this Flying Squad remake goes far beyond the stale-lager swagger of the original ’70s series.
Ray Winstone’s modern-day crew are eager, growling footsoldiers in a violent street war against London crime, ditching the sophistication of 21st-Century policing in favour of baseball bats and bared-tooth aggression.
Nick Love directs with assurance and no apologies (though whether that’s an excuse for not one but two Winstone sex scenes is another matter).
Ben Drew is a forceful if not overly subtle presence in support and, like him, the new Sweeney has a lot more fury than finesse.
