JAL probing fuel leaks on Boeing Dreamliner

Japan Airlines is trying to determine if a Boeing 787 that leaked fuel in Boston last week and again Sunday at Narita Airport has a systemic defect that allows the leaks.

The latest leak occurred Sunday when the plane was being inspected.

According to JAL, the company conducted full inspections and maintenance work on the aircraft after its return to Narita from Boston's Logan International Airport on Wednesday night.

When workers were withdrawing fuel from the tank in the plane's left wing Sunday, about 100 liters of fuel spilled from a release nozzle, according to the airline.

A valve near the nozzle was found to be open, as it was in Boston, JAL said.

With no error in the work found, the company is examining a possible systemic defect that lets the valve open by accident.
