Warner Bros mulling over a Gremlins reboot

Reportedly in talks with Amblin Entertainment

If you enjoyed the recent seasonal re-release of Joe Dante's Gremlins, then you might be pleased to hear that the long-rumoured reboot may still be a possibility.

According to Vulture, Warner Bros are turning over the idea of giving the franchise a new lease of life, and have entered talks with Steven Spielberg's production company, Amblin Entertainment.

Such a possibility has been mooted many times over the years, although Spielberg's price has always been too high for a deal to be done.

However, the fact that Warner are in talks with Amblin suggests that they have reason to believe something may have changed, while their recent reissue of the original bodes well for how seriously they're taking the endeavour.

Whether or not a new Gremlins film actually gets off the ground remains to be seen, but it certainly sounds as though Warner has an appetite for one. Let's just hope the deal isn't done after midnight.

To me a reboot implies that there was something wrong with a movie or a franchise. In this case, I don't see what that problem is. Is there any chance that a much loved film can be left alone? I am pretty certain that 'It's a wonderful life' would not get remade, so please, please, please leave 'Gremlins' alone, we don't need a new version. If people want to watch a Gremlins movie, watch the original one, and if they want to watch a second Gremlins movie, watch the second one. Can movie studios please stop shaking the audience by the ankles to see if their last few coppers fall out onto the floor.

I'd love to see a reboot of the original Star Wars IV: A New Hope (shot by shot). I'm tired to see that old rusty scenes, no matter how much Lucas improves it. It has to be made again (I would only miss Harrison Ford).

@JamieTSB - yeah, reboots are awful. Just look at The Dark Knight - what a horrible idea! I actually don't think this would be a terrible thing. I think the idea of a reboot isn't necessarily wrong, but most of the times they are just awful (i.e, Total Recall). With the amazing cgi they can do these days, it would certainly be visually impressive.

For once I want a re-(whatever) to happen. I miss the Gremlins on the big screen and if this is what it takes then so be it. I only have 2 requests: Keep the anarchic and dark spirit of the first one and keep CGI to a minimum. Gizmo will lose the cute and scrappiness if done 100% CGI - use it only to enhance a visual and not replace it.

i just had an awful idea of who the lead would be. Shia. He ruins everything 80s. I agree with whoever said it was a terrible idea because it is.

@JamieTSB It's a Wonderful Life has already been remade, in the 70's. Did this weird gender reversal on the characters. It also had a spin off TV show too. Anyway, as I've said a hundred times before, a remake of this won't ruin the originals. The possible overuse of cgi would be my main gripe if this goes ahead I think. If it sucks, feel free to tear into it, but its not even out yet. Sure, I agree the studios should be concentrating on making original content rather than rehashing older or classic movies, but they are never going to listen to the 'minority' of cinema goers like us. I know loads of people who went to see Total Recall and knew nothing about the original. They went to see it purely cos it had Colin Farrell in it, or because of the visuals. Its all about the money.

It will be in horrible CGi, made by people who have no love for cinema.

People (inlcuding Total Film) get easily confused between what's a "reboot" and a "remake". In this case, it would be a remake, as JamieTSB correctly alludes to. Was the 1983 "Scarface" called a reboot? Of course not. "Re-boot" is a horrid little turd of a word thats thrown about due to current culture and popular zeitgeist.

this is a reboot thats unneeded, when people talk about the amount of cgi that might get involved i fear Gizmo might get the Yoda treatment, and he'll be jumping off the walls like sonic the hedgehog as well

No no no noooo! The original is amazing and a reboot/make is NOT needed. It would look strange in CGI would just lose all the greatness from the original, not to mention (as someone has already said), they'd probably pick a noobish lead. I think they should just re-release it to cinemas if they want to do anything related to it.

C'mon, everyone who says that a new gremlins movie will be god awful, will be the first ones in line when it comes out, LOL.. If you really loved that movie, why wouldnt you wanna see an updated version, nothing is sacred in hollywood, as they have proved to us over and over again..., get over it and enjoy it for what it is, if you dont wanna watch it, go back and watch the old ones, with that cutting edge 80's FX! , LOL ..of course it's not needed..Batman Begins wasn't needed...but just imagine a gremlins movie that shows their origins in Japan or wherever, if they do the movie, they have to show a new story we havent seen

i'd like the gremlins and Mogwai to be played by the cast of the mighty boosh in mo cap suits please.( my first thought was to hope that it would be a high quality movie respectful of the originals, but then i realised if i was going to indulge in ludicrous fantasy i might as well make it interesting.)

All we are doing now is waiting for some guy in Hollywood to think "you know what? The Godfather is overrated, and it looks old. Let's remake it, with a younger, sexier cast. And set it in the future. In 3D. I genuinely believe some of these films get remade because some guy in Hollywood believes all old films should eventually be replaced as if they are flat batteries.
