Won't Back Down

2

Maggie Gyllenhaal and Viola Davis are two mums determined to save a failing school

The American public school system is broken.

Teachers are overworked and underpaid, and drop-out rates are soaring. How to fix it? How about some Hollywood bullshit?

Maggie Gyllenhaal and Viola Davis play two warrior-mums determined to turn around a failing inner-city school in Pittsburgh.

Strangely, the moustache-twirling villains in this scenario are not budget-slicing government goons but corrupt teachers’ union reps, giving the whole film a glow of right-wing propaganda.

There’s also some witless romance squeezed in between all the handwringing and gnashing of teeth.

The leads are fine, but the movie’s about as fun as summer school.
