Milos Forman’s graceful, sympathetic comedy…

Milos Forman’s first US movie isn’t far removed from his wry Czech comedies (A Blonde In Love; The Firemen’s Ball), exploring social embarrassment and the ever-widening generation gap.

Middle-class New York couple Lynn Carlin and Buck Henry search for their runaway teenage daughter in the East Village counterculture, linking up with other parents in a bid to “understand” their wayward offspring.

An incongruous highlight is Forman regular Vincent Schiavelli giving a pot smoking tutorial to a room of respectable New Yorkers. Graceful, sympathetic comedy.
