Niftily dodging the self-indulgent pitfalls that have derailed many a writer-director-producer-star (we’re looking at you, Zach Braff), Josh Radnor’s sophomore effort is an articulate pleasure.
He’s affable as 30-something Jesse, who’s thrown into early midlife crisis by a visit to his old university. But the real treasure is Elizabeth Olsen, appealingly natural as the precocious student who draws Jesse’s attention.
Radnor’s smart-mouthed script and faultless supporting cast (look out for Allison Janney’s acerbic, movie-stealing moment) even offset a final 10 minutes so irritating they threaten to sink the whole thing.
