RoboCop (2014)

RoboCop, set in the not to distant future, presents a world riddled with corruption. In a time where criminality and robotic technologies are at their greatest, only one man can save the dystopian city of Detroit.

Alex Murphy, an honest and devoted officer is violently gunned down in the midst of doing his best to rid the city of crime, leaving him gravely injured and unable to perform his civic duty.  “OmniCorp”, headed by iniquitous CEO Raymond Sellars, is at the centre of modern robotics and doing what they can to save his life and return Murphy to the force, they alter his broken body and create “RoboCop”.

Although his powers and strength have increased, RoboCop has to face his inner demons as well as the illicit customs that the city has turned to, as he deals with subconscious memories of his former life.

As a remake of the 1987 original, director José Padhila (Elite Squad) looks to be considerably updating the film for the modern audience. Taking a film loved by many a sci-fi fan and vamping it up may be a bold move for the director, but the casting choices are enough to begin easing fears.

With Joel Kinnaman adopting the lead role (best known for his part in The Killing), Gary Oldman as the creator of RoboCop, Michael Keaton as the villainous CEO and Samuel L Jackson as a charming media tycoon, the film looks set to be a blockbuster.

Originally set to be released in 2013, RoboCop was pushed back to February 2014.

Kinnaman has stated that it’s “an exciting action movie with a lot of terrific stuff” but at the same time, "it's a movie with substance and something that is going to make people think".

RoboCop is set to open on 7 February 2014.
