The Hobbit has released another new TV spot containing a few new snippets of footage, most notably our first brief glimpse of the dragon, Smaug.
The dragon’s appearance is a very fleeting one, seen here flying overhead and strafing a city with jets of flame, but it’s more than enough to get us extremely excited about his presence.
Smaug will be voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch, and will play a much weightier role in the two later films in the new trilogy. Still, its nice to know he’ll be making his presence felt in the first entry too…

And with that, our excitement levels just hit fever pitch. There’s something extremely Christmassy about a new Middle-earth film, and we’re delighted that New Line have decided to return to the festive release schedule that served Lord Of The Rings so well.
Directed by Peter Jackson and co-starring Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will open in the UK on 13 December 2012.

Was that also a glimpse of the battle of the five armies ?

I'd be mightily surprised if it was, seeing as five armies happens at the end so will be in the 3rd film.

Although, thinking about it, you may be right as i'm not sure what else it could be. It's by the side of a mountain and it appears to be a bunch of humans vs orcs. (no sign of the elves or dwarfs or...the 5th one. the eagles was it? i can't remember). Unless maybe it's something from the appendices which he's wedged into the film somewhere. I really need to get this book read again before the film comes out.

**POSSIBLE SPOILERS** I always got the impression that the bulk of the story of The Hobbit would be over by the end of the second film, and the third would be a bridge between them. But the Battle of Five Armies may end up being the whole of the third film, like Return of the King (which would be really weird, as Bilbo is asleep for most of it in the book.
