5 Broken Cameras

4

Five cameras. Five years. One powerful documentary

A child’s first words are “army” and “cartridge”; a man shot in the shoulder simply says, “It’s superficial”; and documentarian Emad Burnat has five cameras busted over five years, one of them taking a bullet.

This startling chronicle focuses on Burnat’s fellow villagers as the Palestinian settlement of Bil’in is robbed of much of its farmland when the Israeli government constructs a Separation Wall.

Amid the suffering, injustice and bullets are tenderness and hope, and Burnat’s need to film recalls Jafar Panahi’s refusal to be silenced in This Is Not A Film.

Like that doc, this is one of 2012’s strongest.
