owners who love to swim and lie in the sun are often faced
with the conundrum of where to lounge comfortably and also be close to the water. Rocky, inaccessible beaches or
super-yacht sun decks several metres above sea level can be irksome.
ParrLuxe founder and designer Stuart Parr (who recently oversaw the development of the Marc Newson-produced Aquarama Super for Italian boatmaker Riva) has solved this water-access problem by creating customisable luxury sea cabanas that afford portable relaxation on the waves. These inflatable devices (from $35,000) are made of luxurious yet durable materials – Pennel & Flipo’s Orca (the “Gore-Tex of the marine world”), as well as carbon fibre, stainless steel, polished teak and the softest terry cloth – and can be blown up in about 15 minutes using a small pump. They accommodate between 12 and 18 people, depending on their size, making them über-rafts for groups or families.
Each cabana is hand built in Italy according to client specifications, and Parr is happy to incorporate requests for special colour combinations, graphics and other finishes that match cabana to yacht or a particular design scheme. Although the standard size for a canopied watercraft is 13ft x 17ft, variations can be made, with an assortment of sun-protective tarps and Bimini tops. And for people who really want to be close to the water, the sea cabana offers a natural plunge-pool option that allows seawater in through protective floor netting, thereby keeping marine creatures at bay.
These design-forward, seafaring, engine-free cabanas have already established a discerning following from Shelter Island (Parr’s home) to the Greek islands. Those wanting a mega pool-toy or looking for a peaceful perch or paddle pen should take note.
