Equal opportunities

Our commitment

The Financial Times (FT) has a global staff of around 2,000, of whom 600 are editorial staff. Our mission is to be the gold standard in global business news and analysis, in print and online.

A key factor in realising this is in the recruitment and retention of the best possible people. We attract people to work at the FT through our reputation for integrity, quality and innovation.

We retain the best people by creating a vibrant working environment that nurtures talent and provides opportunities for development.

Our actions

Diversity council and training

The FT, as part of Pearson, has a proactive approach to diversity. Along with other companies, we are represented on a Pearson-wide diversity council.

Pearson Diversity Summer Internship programme

We actively encourage diversity within our organisation; each year, we take part in the Pearson Diversity Summer Internship programme.

This is a UK-only programme run by our parent company Pearson. Each year, we recruit between five to nine interns across a range of departments, including Editorial.

First Women Awards

The FT Group won Business of the Year at the 2009 First Women Awards.

The judges concluded that:

The FT Group is a business that inspires other women.

While the corporate boardrooms of Britain have, worryingly, seen a recent decline in female participation, this is a business with a high proportion of women on the management team.

And as for its front-line staff, this is a journalistic team of unparalleled judgement and ability.

This business, like all others in its sector, is wrestling with the dramatic change brought about by the shift of information online. Here again, it is at the forefront of thinking about how the media will meet the challenge of the digital age.

With such a group of women at its helm, how could it be anything but daring, imaginative and counter-intuitive.

Retention

As well as competitive salaries and holiday allowances, our UK employees receive a range of benefits. These include:

  • a share option scheme
  • private medical insurance
  • subsidised gym membership
  • access to a confidential help and advice service, PeopleLine.

We also take part in Pearson’s New Directions programme, which helps Pearson people undertake a short-term assignment in a different part of the world.
