Based on Jim Cartright's play The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, this screen adaptation directed by Mark Herman is an underdog film about an underdog girl named Little Voice (or LV for short). LV (Jane Horrocks from Mike Leigh's Life Is Sweet who does all her own singing) is a shy, mousy woman living with her mom Mari (Secrets and Lies' Brenda Blethyn). Little Voice doesn't leave her house. Instead she sings along to her record collection of Shirley Bassey, Judy Garland, and Marilyn Monroe. Her

Despite many good scenes of whimsy, humor, and pathos, not to mantion great mimicry of Garland, Dietrich, and others, the movie is trying to do too much and the last reel is weak, contrived and burdened with a fake romance and upbeat ending.
Little Voice is based on Jim Cartwright's play The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, which premiered in 1992 at the National Theatre in London.
has the same semi-whimsical and semi-earthy tone as director Mark Herman's 'Brassed Off.' The last quarter of the story, however, seems strangely out of sync with the mostly bubbly set-up.
Rises to... delirious heights with Horrocks' performance.
