Silver Linings Playbook Sweeps Independent Spirit Awards

The winners of the 28th annual Independent Spirit Awards were announced on Saturday February 23, 2013, in a ceremony hosted by Andy Samberg at a beach luncheon in Santa Monica. In a tight race for Best Feature, in the end Silver Linings Playbook took home the gold or, in this case, the bird on a pole. The event will be broadcast on IFC tonight at 10pm. See the full list of results below.

Now's here's my kind of awards show: congratulations Matthew McConaughey, Helen Hunt and John Hawkes! THE INVISIBLE WAR's win was particularly well-deserved, considering the Oscar is no doubt going to go with SUGAR MAN as others have. Nice to see an awards show that it isn't influenced by the CIA.

I saw Argo but not Zero Dark, and it wasn't a bad movie. Oscar worthy, award worthy? I don't know but we take what we can get these days.

I thought that Searching For Sugar man was vastly superior to The Invisible War, though I don't begrudge anyone that would disagree.

I'm actually surprised SUGAR MAN wasn't on this list. Then again, there were 15 great documentaries this year; still want to see THE HOUSE I LIVE IN and THE GATEKEEPERS.

Didn't see 'The House I Live In', but 'The Gate Keepers' - top 10 of 2012.

Hey I just wanted to tell you that if you are telling off 3 of my favorite movies of this decade and you haven't even seen one of them, you're a total SCUMDOUCHE. I made that up.

Moonrise Kingdom was better. Sorry you have such terrible taste.

I thought "Moonrise Kingdom" was a better film, in any categorical regard, than "SLP". Still, happy to see Miss Lawrence shine, as I was rooting between her and one of my other favorite young actresses, Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

Also very happy to see "Middle of Nowhere" get the Cassavetes this year. Like last year's winner "Pariah", it needs to be seen by more people.

I will tell you how amazed I was with Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Coopers performances. I haven?t seen a movie where Bradley has had a character of real sustenance. Before Silver Linings Playbook, Bradley Cooper was still Phil from The Hangover to me. Now, I see him as an amazing actor.

How the fuck did Beasts of the Southern Wild beat Moonrise Kingdom for cinematography? Otherwise, the rest of the wins are fine.

I also found it odd that End of watch was nominated for cinematography. I love that movie, but I don't think the camera work is anything award worthy. Was The Master not eligible for these awards or something?

There's a budget cap of 25 million or something. "Master" was 32 million.

Totally agree. For two reasons: Beasts had terrible cinematography. Way to much shaky cam. Second reason: Moonrise Kingdom had the best cinematography of the year.

Eh. While every Wes Anderson film is wonderful to look at, I have to say Skyfall has the best cinematography this year. But that's just my opinion.

Either way, Beasts was't the best. End of story.

Am I the only who thinks SLP was a tad bit overrated? ( I don't use that word much, but I just don't really see the massive appeal of it)

I mean I didn't hate it or anything but yeah for sure overrated

Hate that term and appreciate that you don't use it often, but it's soooooo often misused. A movie that has great critical and audience appeal can't be overrated, it's just not rated by you. It's rated exactly where it belongs, you just don't agree with everybody else which is cool. I famously feel that way about almost every Terrence Malick film ever made.

It had fantastic acting, but the film itself was only just a little better than a normal chick flick.

The only strong category was 'Best Documentaries'. In fact, this years docs were so good any number of the below coulda easily been nominated: The Gate Keepers, Bully, Searching For Sugar Man, Brooklyn Castle, This Is Not A Film, Chasing Ice, West Of Memphis, & 5 Broken Cameras. Perhaps budgets & submission deadlines were an issue. The 'Best International Film' & 'Best Cinematography' choices seem - ehhh - odd.

It's so funny how Harvey Weinstein conquered this awards, I love SLP very much, but the best film should be on Beasts and the best director, I pity all nominees, I wish Harvey would have cancer and will not survive and that will be great no more cheating! Saving Private Ryan and Cate Blanchett should have won in 1999 shame on you Harvey and if Jenn lawrence win best actress, i would forecer hate him, Riva will win, ready for the upset, fucking fat old basterd

did like Silver Linings Playbook.
It was an award worthy.
I can't really say oscar worthy. But film was amazing.
The movie was something directors have failed to achieve.
Amazing but tolerable at times
I had fun watching SLP
Haven't even seen any of the above except SLP.
