Although Warner Bros’. Justice League has had to go back to the drawing board, Guillermo Del Toro doesn’t mind the idea of pursuing Justice League Dark. For those unfamiliar with the unconventional superhero team, the title launched in September 2011, and it’s comprised of John Constantine, Madame Xanadu, Deadman, Shade, Zatanna, Mindwarp, and Enchantress. Del Toro tells Total Film, “I am going to be presenting my storyline to DC and Warners of where I want to take this universe. We do have a writer, but until that is firmed up, I have to keep it a secret. I hope it happens.” While Total Film refers to the project as “Justice League Dark”, the project shares multiple characters with Heaven Sent, which we reported on back in November. It’s likely that it’s the same project, but TF is probably referring to it as “Justice League Dark” since that’s the name of the comic book.
Hit the jump for more. Del Toro’s new film, Pacific Rim, opens in 3D on July 12th. He’s set the gothic haunted house film, Crimson Peak, as his follow-up.
Speaking to Total Film, Del Toro says
“It’s going really really well. It’s like meeting old friends. I grew up with Demon Etrigan, with Swamp Thing, with Deadman, so these are characters that are near and dear to my heart.”
“I’d love to use the origins that are proper to each character. I love the idea of Jason Blood as a paladin and a knight…. I love the entire Constantine mythology, the Dead Man mythology, the Alex Holland Swamp Thing mythology. These are really rich things to well, and to dig.”
Del Toro has been attached to produce a Deadman adaptation since 2009, so Justice League Dark/Heaven Sent might be the way to finally bring the character to the big screen.
Of course, this is probably distant-future stuff. Warner Bros. can’t even figure out Justice League proper, and that features characters people actually know. Since Del Toro has already set his sights on Crimson Peak as a follow-up, and since he has plenty of other projects he wants to do, Justice League Dark will probably just be another film that ends up in his orbit. Maybe he’ll direct it one day, maybe he’ll write it, or maybe he’ll just produce it. In any event, don’t expect to see it in theaters any time soon.

Warner Bros shoud just say yes. They are so far behind on live action comic book films that they should buy whatever Del Toro is selling.
That’s what I always thought…. DC is much better with the “dark” and “noir” stuff (as in DC Vertigo) than shiny superheroes, at least for me. I cannot understand why film studios won’t pick up on that. There’s SO MUCH out there (100 Bullets, DMZ, Scalped, etc.)…
Couldn’t agree more with Matt (above comment). If Del Toro wanted to do anything DC related Warner Bros has to say yes. They are so far behind Marvel its disheartning. They are trying to make up for years of just Batman and sub-par everything else, with one swing with Justice League, and look how thats going. Give Del Toro the green light for whenever he want to do this!!!!

I dig Guillermo del Toro, and dig just about everything the man touches (not literally;) though it sounds like he’s cruising for bruising. There is virtually no way a ‘Justice League Dark’ will get off the ground before a Justice League feature.
And once that happens–if Warner Bros can get their act together any time soon–will (probably) not want to invest in characters that few people have ever heard of.
Please, Guillermo, focus you energy on getting “At The Mountains Of Madness” back on track, which the success of “Pacific Rim” will hopefully expedite.

It is far out and probably a pipe dream, but it’s amazing the kind of stuff that Del Toro can come up with. And I don’t think DC/Warner is capable of much “original” content at this point – they should be all over this (right after HB 3 of course).

It’s a good opportunity for a Hellblazer movie reboot. Let’s hope this time that they will respect the true origins of the character as a Londoner rather than an american from Los Angeles. Del Toro did a great job with Hellboy so I’m not worried.
