How To Spend It

About us

Main

How To Spend It has been part of the Financial Times for more than 40 years, first as a single page in the Saturday edition of the newspaper, then as an expanded section and, finally, from 1994, as a large-format glossy magazine. Widely regarded as the benchmark for luxury lifestyle magazines, it is now distributed globally with the Financial Times 30 times a year.

Howtospendit.com was launched in 2009. It has many unique characteristics, including free access to the searchable content of nearly 100 issues of the magazine, organised by subject rather than by print edition, plus additional web-only daily postings – blogs, columns, interviews and news – from our award-winning team of writers and editors. In September 2011, howtospendit.com launched a free iPad app (howtospendit.com/ipad) that achieved 150,000 downloads within a year.

Editors and Contributing Editors

Gilliandebono

Gillian de Bono The Editor
Our supremo spent 18 years editing lifestyle magazines before taking over the reins at How To Spend It in 1998. Since 2009, she has championed its digital offerings – including the highly successful iPad app – but her true love remains a really brilliant headline. The British Society of Magazine Editors has named her Editor of the Year on three occasions, twice for How To Spend ItLuxury: champagne. Daily

Damianfoxe

Damian Foxe Fashion Fabulist
How To Spend It’s Fashion Director has been conceptualising and styling the magazine’s fashion shoots for 15 years. An MA journalism alumnus of Central Saint Martins, he segued into styling after being discovered by the late Isabella Blow. He is rare in the fashion industry for being stylist and photographer on the same shoots. Luxury: an art-deco diamond dragonfly clip to pin on my tuxedo lapel

Luciavanderpost

Lucia van der Post Grande Dame of Luxury
Our illustrious Associate Editor turned the How To Spend It pages of the Financial Times into cult Saturday reading and then oversaw its migration to glossy stock in 1994 as Founding Editor. Her many awards include the Luxury Briefing Award for Excellence, the Walpole Medal of Excellence and several Jasmines for perfume features in How To Spend It. Luxury: time in the African wilderness

Jonathanmargolis

Jonathan Margolis Mr Technopolis TV

Having covered consumer technology since the 1980s, Jonathan Margolis is How To Spend It’s star of both print and (72dpi) screen. He has talked us through the coming of age of laptops, mobile phones, portable music systems and digital cameras, but is still waiting – without much hope – for a flying car. Luxury: the Leica M9 with the Noctilux-M 50mm f/0.95 – a lens more sensitive than the human eye

Nicholasfoulkes

Nick Foulkes Watch Fancier and Dandy
Our resident watch and cigar specialist – and International Best-Dressed lister (2011) – bought his first “vintage” mechanical timepiece aged 11, when it would have been called “junk”. He seeks respite from the laborious business of selecting pochettes by penning the Swellboy columns, in which he subjects the high life mercilessly to his vast vocabulary. Luxury: an endless supply of Cohiba Sublimes (and time to enjoy them)

Viviennebecker

Vivienne Becker Gem Doyenne
In her research for How To Spend It, jewellery historian, journalist and author Vivienne Becker lays her delicate, gloved hands on the world’s most valuable gems. She also masterminds jewellery exhibitions, forecasts trends and consults for the industry, lectures and broadcasts. In 2003, she received a Gem Award for Excellence as International Writer of the Year. Luxury: a Golconda diamond

Simondeburton

Simon de Burton Motor Maestro
A How To Spend It frontline reporter since 1999, Simon de Burton became a luxury specialist after working at Sotheby’s. He has written on wildly diverse subjects, from furniture fashioned from decommissioned missiles to Titanic memorabilia, but his expertise is the world’s rarest and most exotic cars, motorcycles and boats. Luxury: a bespoke Series 11 wristwatch by RW Smith

Johnstimpfig

John Stimpfig Grape Crusader
Since becoming our fine-wine specialist in 1999, John Stimpfig has picked up five awards – all for articles written for How To Spend It. He has been named Lanson Wine Writer of the Year, won a Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Award and received three Louis Roederer awards, including the rather fabulous Champagne Writer of the Year. Luxury: a bottle (OK, a case) of 1945 Latour
