Kelly Wearstler – Day 3
Bootcamp, Bergdorf’s and boutiques are all on the agenda as the designer takes in the Big Apple

I arrive at JFK at 5.45am and call my boys, leaving a message
wishing them an awesome day. Carlos, my trusted driver, whisks me off to my
hotel, the Bowery. I like staying downtown because my showroom is in
Chelsea’s Starrett-Lehigh building, which is nearby. Plus, I just love
shopping in that area whenever I have a few extra minutes.
I head to an 8am Barry’s Bootcamp class so that I’ll feel as good as possible
after the red-eye flight. After breakfast in my hotel room, Carlos drives
me uptown where I am designing a town house. It is going to be amazing! I meet the clients, contractors and architect, along with Leana
and Fernando, my talented senior interior designers. We have an extremely
detail-oriented four-hour walk-through, reviewing the current condition of the site, as well as the mechanical, electrical and plumbing placements, problem-solving along the way. It’s a tad chilly – OK, beyond freezing – as the house is only in the framing stage. Luckily, I’m layered up in a chunky Maison Martin Margiela sweater, T-shirt, my ubiquitous denim
jeans with leather, cerulean-blue Tabitha Simmons booties, a Kenzo coat, a
hand-knitted vintage cap and my signature black-and-white leather gloves.
Unluckily, I forget to wear socks and my toes are numb.
After warming up over lunch at BG, the restaurant I designed on the seventh
floor of Bergdorf Goodman, I hop over to my seventh-floor boutique. I meet with
my buyer and sales people to discuss new products. I’m especially excited by
our new bronze boxes and one-of-a-kind heads encrusted with
semiprecious stones. Of course, I also check the merchandise and tweak the
space. Every time I’m in NYC, I have to go and give my boutique some love.
Carlos and I head back downtown so I call my boys and find out how their school
day went. All is well. At the architectural offices of Steven Harris,
the team meets for a few hours regarding the town house project, deliberating
over materials, finishes, furnishings and lighting.
Hopping into the car, Carlos delivers me to my fashion showroom in Chelsea
to meet with my sales team. We go over plans and line sheets for my resort
and holiday collections before I head off to one of my favourite stores, Strand,
for a little book shopping. It has an amazing selection of out-of-print
and new books, plus it’s open late.
After a late dinner in my hotel room and a chat on the phone with my husband
(which coincides with my determination to get all of my emails answered), I set
the alarm on my phone and I’m off to sleep.
