Western viewers might liken it to Disney meets The Dark Knight.

Singaporean director Eric Khoo's stylishly impressive homage to the mangaka, converting his memoir, A Drifting Life, into a cinematic work employing animation that is true to Tatsumi's original work.

It's potent stuff, delving into pornography, incest, murder and mutilation in the company of alienated men and unhappy, sometimes cruel women.

If the structure sometimes disrupts the story of his life, the strong lines and melancholy sensibility of the illustration form an anchor that keep the power of Tatsumi's work firmly in view.

If Khoo's film doesn't amount to more than its parts, more often than not those parts are vivid and arresting.

The overall impact is one of the art reflecting upon the artist, of characters chronicling the formation and maturation of their creator.

Engaging, entertaining and beautifully animated, Tatsumi is a treat for fans and is likely to make converts of newcomers, though it's more successful as a showcase for his stories than as a documentary or biopic.

The film artfully combines, though sometimes rather confusingly, scenes from Tatsumi's life story as told in his graphic autobiography...

The slightly slushy tone of celebration rather obtusely fails to engage with the nihilist, pessimist nature of Tatsumi's work. Anyway, an intriguing event.

A touching tribute interweaves with tough storytelling in Eric Khoo's poignant portmanteau riff on Japanese graphic artist Yoshihiro Tatsumi's works.

Audience Reviews for Tatsumi

Tatsumi's autobiographical, and fictional short, stories are brilliant source material to draw from, and there's a definite kick to be had from watching them animated on the screen. The short stories in particular, with their fantastic score and pacing, are a joy to behold (although his most confrontational and shocking stories are omitted). That said, Tatsumi deserves better than this poorly put together, cheaply animated and slightly muddled film in which a motion-comiceque animation style is employed, the occasional awful voice actors pops up and an overall lack of narrative cohesion spoil the fun.

Though disjointed in narrative and somewhat emotionally distant, Tatsumi remains a fascinating and uncompromising vision that reels audience in a world full of both fantasy and disenchantment.
