Subaru introduced its first pairing of hybrid power and all-wheel-drive in its Crosstrek crossover today at the 2013 New York International Auto Show,...
It could be the cutest little automotive cage match in recent memory.
In one corner, you have the all-new Mitsubishi Mirage hatchback, introduced Thursday at the 2013 New York International Auto Show. In the other, the 1.0-liter Ford Fiesta, announced at the L.A. Auto Show in November.
Each sub-compact has promised to be the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid car sold in the U.S. Only one can win. But which will it be?
Only Mitsubishi has released gas mileage estimates. The Japanese automaker said its Mirage will get an estimated 37 mpg in the city, 44 mpg on the highway, and 40 mpg combined. Ford has yet to release figures for the Fiesta, saying only that it expects the car to get more than 40 mpg on the highway.
"We feel strongly that when the 1-liter Fiesta arrives in dealer showrooms this year, it will be best-in-class for fuel efficiency for gas-only engines," said Ford spokeswoman Debra Hotaling.
Dodge rolled out a restyled Dodge Durango at the 2013 New York International Auto Show, offering some new technology in the cabin and a fuel-saving eight-speed transmission.
The 2014 Durango, however, will not get the diesel engine option soon to be available in its corporate cousin, the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which debuted in redesigned form at the Detroit Auto Show.
The Durango's new automatic gearbox -- which can be shifted with steering wheel paddles or a "rotary" shifter in the console -- will increase gas mileage by up to 9%, Dodge said.
The Durango gets mild exterior updates, including a restyled front and rear with LED lights. Inside, the full-sized SUV offers a choice of a 5-inch or an 8.4-inch touchscreen that includes audio and climate controls, among other functions. A separate 7-inch screen serves as the instrument cluster and can be customized, Dodge said.
More screens are available for entertaining back-seat passengers --...
Once the icon of stodgy sensibility, the Volvo station wagon went out of production after the 2011 model year.
Now its back, as a “sports wagon” variant of the existing S60 sedan, the automaker announced at the 2013 New York International Auto Show.
“The V60 builds on our wagon heritage,” Volvo Cars of North America Chief Executive John Maloney said in a statement. “And this time, we’ve added sophistication with the dynamic driving performance of a sedan.”
A high-performance version, the V60 R-Design, made its world debut Thursday at the 2013 New York Auto Show.
The V60 wagon will arrive in the U.S. early next year as a 2014 model. Volvo has not yet announced pricing or specifications. But the current S60 sedan has base prices ranging from $31,900 to $44,100 in three different trim levels with two turbocharged engine choices -- a 2.5-liter five-cylinder and a 3.0-liter six-cylinder -- and...
Scion kicked off the second day of the 2013 New York International Auto Show by unveiling a refreshed version of its tC coupe.
The two-door compact car is Scion’s biggest seller, so the 2014 model is a relatively minor upgrade from the version Toyota’s youth-oriented brand started selling in 2010.
"The sustained success of the tC, which accounts for 40 percent of all Scions ever sold, challenged designers to enhance the 2014 sports coupe in ways that keep it exciting to today’s drivers without losing its core appeal," Scion Vice President Doug Murtha said.
The exterior styling gets a push in a slightly more aggressive direction, with redesigned headlights, grille and a front bumper with a bit of a chin to it. LED accent lights in the front and taillights in the back give the car a more contemporary slant.
You may not know that Hyundai sells a $60,000 full-size luxury car, but there are about 7,200 people who do.
That’s how many Equus sedans Hyundai has sold in the U.S. since it debuted in 2010. To put that into perspective, Lexus sold more of its full-size LS sedans in 2012 alone.
Looking to juice its sales of the Equus, Hyundai on Wednesday announced a midlife refresh of the car at the 2013 New York Auto Show.
The biggest changes to the car are to the interior. Hyundai gave the center stack a much-needed redesign that’s more worthy of the stratosphere the Equus is trying to operate in. The instrument panel also gets upgraded; on the base models it now features a 7-inch LCD screen, while the premium Ultimate models get a fully digital 12.3-inch display.
In a series of vehicle debuts at the New York Auto Show on Wednesday, General Motors moved to shore up several product lines with new or updated models – including announcing the return of its storied Camaro Z/28 muscle car.
The automaker showed off how it was updating its entire Camaro line to improve aerodynamics, unveiled a redesigned Cadillac CTS sedan, refreshed versions of Buick’s Buick LaCrosse and Regal models.
"Product cycles are getting shorter across the entire industry, so everyone needs to keep up with the pace,” said Jessica Caldwell, an analyst with auto information company Edmunds.com. “That's especially true for Detroit automakers who finally have their groove back, and now they need to maintain that momentum.”
How well the changes, which range from the entirely new CTS design to relatively minor updates in the Buick, will resonate with car shoppers is a question.
“Car buyers will ultimately deliver the verdict on GM's updated...
You didn’t need a crystal ball to know that Infiniti was bringing a hybrid crossover to the 2013 New York Auto Show.
With parent company Nissan announcing a hybrid Pathfinder earlier on Wednesday, no one was surprised when Infiniti announced its version of the same vehicle just a few hours later. (Infiniti also told us it was doing this several weeks ago.)
The new luxury hybrid is dubbed the QX60 Hybrid. This seven-passenger crossover was originally launched as the JX, but Infiniti recently changed its nomenclature on all its products. All sedans now start with Q, while crossovers and SUVs get QX.
The QX60 Hybrid has an inline, 2.5-liter supercharged four-cylinder engine paired to a 15 kW electric motor. The motor is powered by a lithium-ion battery that sits under the foldable third-row seat. Infiniti says its packaging means no loss of interior or cargo room.
This combination makes 250 horsepower, compared to 265 horsepower on the...
It’s not every day an automaker promotes a feature that sucks.
But Honda unveiled a refreshed version of its popular Odyssey minivan at the 2013 New York Auto Show with a unique option -- a vacuum cleaner built into the rear cargo area.
It's the first vacuum-equipped vehicle to hit the market, ready to suck up all the snacks and drinks spilled by the kids. Honda said it worked with Shop-Vac to design the HondaVac, with a replaceable filter and bag.
The contraption fits into two small compartments built into the left side of the rear cargo area. The top bin holds the hose and attachments, while the bottom section holds the canister.
This vacuum can reach every corner of the Odyssey’s interior, according to Honda. The automaker said it will run indefinitely with the motor on, or for up to eight minutes when it's off.
Chevrolet unveiled a restyled 2014 Camaro line at the New York Auto Show on Wednesday and offered a surprise for motor sports enthusiasts by bringing back a track-ready Z/28.
With Aerosmith’s “Back in the Saddle” pulsating in the background, Mark Reuss, president of GM’s North American operations, took the stage and introduced the Z/28.
“This is not simply a straight-line, 0-60 drag strip car, although you can do that if you want,” Reuss said. “This is a car set up for track perfection, just like the original Z/28.”
“If you want a street-legal track car this is the car for you. It is the real deal,” Reuss said as he showed off the matte white car with black wheel rims.
It’s not for those looking for creature comforts. It comes only with a six-speed manual transmission. There’s no automatic option. About the only available amenity is air conditioning, and even that isn't...
With the introduction of a new Pathfinder hybrid crossover at the New York Auto Show on Wednesday, Nissan signaled that it's going to once again move back into vehicles that have a combined gas and electric powertrain after nearly abandoning the technology to develop the all-electric Leaf compact car.
“It makes sense considering where consumer sentiment is and where fuel prices might go,” said Ken Kcomt, Nissan’s director of product planning for trucks and sport-utilities. “It is one of several hybrid models we will be introducing over several years.”
The new Pathfinder features a system that Nissan will also use for its upscale Infiniti QX60 crossover that was also launched at the show.
With the exception of several hundred Infiniti M hybrids sold over the past year, Nissan basically pulled out of the market when it ended sales of its Altima hybrid sedan in 2011.
Acura officially unveiled its all-new MDX crossover at the 2013 New York Auto Show.
The seven-passenger vehicle, unveiled in concept form in January at the Detroit Auto Show, swaps a bit of power for healthy gains in gas mileage. It’s also significantly lighter and a bit bigger than the previous version.
The 2014 MDX has a direct-injected 3.5-liter V-6 engine that replaces the older 3.7-liter unit. Horsepower on this third-generation model drops marginally from 300 to 290, while torque drops by 3 pound-feet to 267. A six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters is your only choice of gearbox.
The power decrease is mitigated by the MDX shedding about 275 pounds from the previous model. This is due to the liberal use of high-strength steel, aluminum and magnesium throughout the vehicle.
