Blood

3

A crisp little Brit-thriller, that doesn't quite escape its TV origins

Forgive the generic title and parochial scope, and there’s a fine, if minor-key, film here.

Based on writer Bill Gallagher’s 2004 TV series Conviction (and it shows), it follows small-town policemen brothers Paul Bettany and Stephen Graham as they investigate the killing of a 12-year-old girl.

It verges on ponderous, but with a top cast, including Brian Cox and Mark Strong, some big themes (family, memory, guilt) done small, it’s a crisp, cold little thriller with a real sense of the noose tightening around otherwise unremarkable lives.
